Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 30 points as the red-hot Los Angeles Lakers won for the 11th time in 12 games, 95-88, over the Atlanta Hawks.

Bryant made 10-of-19 shots from the field and sank 10-of-11 free throws to overcome poor shooting games by Shaquille O'Neal and Glen Rice.

"Kobe picked up the scoring slack," said Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson. "We were able to play a pretty good third quarter. They started overplaying the wings."

"Our energy wasn't there tonight," Bryant said. "We were kind of sluggish so we kind of had to pick our spots where we could hold their team down in the third quarter. Sometimes we just came down and scored and had an opportunity to shoot the ball and I shot it."

O'Neal grabbed 13 rebounds, but shot 4-of-15 from the floor and 1-of-5 from the free throw line before fouling out with 5:54 to go in the fourth quarter. It was O'Neal's lowest scoring game since he had six points and got ejected late in the second quarter for a fight with Charles Barkley at Houston on November 10.

"It was probably just one of those nights where you aren't hitting any of your shots, but my teammates stuck up for me and we still came out of here with a win," said O'Neal. "I'll just have to get back on track tomorrow. I don't like to have two bad games in a row."

Rice scored 11 points but made just 5-of-17 shots.

A.C. Green had eight points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which has won four straight and is one game ahead of the Portland Trail Blazers for the lead in the Pacific Division. The Lakers took advantage of Atlanta's mistakes, scoring 28 points off 16 turnovers.

John Salley, who was averaging just over seven minutes per game in 18 contests, played 20 minutes with O'Neal in foul trouble. He scored seven points.

Isaiah Rider led the Hawks with 33 points and Alan Henderson added 13 and nine rebounds. Atlanta shot just 38.5 percent (30-of-78) and has dropped three of its last four games.

"We definitely wanted to make a statement tonight and wanted to do better than we obviously did," Rider said. "We came up short to a good team. We started out really sloppy if you ask me. They had a better night and we played really sluggish."

Dikembe Mutombo had 11 points and 11 rebounds and blocked four shots before fouling out with 1:59 to go.

Bryant scored 17 points in the first half as the Lakers held a 50-45 advantage.

Bimbo Coles hit a jumper from the left sideline one minute into the third period to cut the Lakers' lead to 50-47. But Green responded with a layup, Bryant made two free throws and dunked with 9:49 left to stretch the lead to 56-47.

Atlanta cut the margin to 59-54 when Mutombo made two free throws with just under four minutes remaining in the third. Rice hit a 19-footer 14 seconds later to trigger an 11-0 run that was capped by Green's layup with 2:12 left.

Ron Harper, who had nine points and eight boards, made a free throw to give the Lakers their biggest lead, 79-63, with 10:39 left in the fourth.
