Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Allan Houston scored eight of his season-high 31 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes as the New York Knicks extended their season-high winning streak to five games with a 100-93 victory over the stubborn Dallas Mavericks.

The Knicks took an 86-76 lead following a 16-footer by Chris Childs with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter before Dallas scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to two. Former Knick Hubert Davis capped the spurt with two free throws with 4:10 remaining.

Houston drained consecutive jumpers from the left corner, giving the Knicks a 90-84 advantage with three minutes left.

Dirk Nowitzki countered with a 3-pointer and Michael Finely had a basket to pull the Mavericks within one with 2:37 to play. But Houston struck again, sinking consecutive baskets, making it 94-89 with 43 seconds remaining.

"I want the ball at that point in time (fourth quarter)," Houston said. "I felt like I was getting my legs under my shot and was getting good balance. I felt like I was giving myself a good chance to make shots."

After Finley missed a 14-footer, Patrick Ewing sank two free throws with 35 seconds left to seal the victory.

Marcus Camby had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for New York, which moved within one game of Miami for the best record in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference at 15-9.

"We have played better recently, but the test of an NBA season is over time, so we have a lot of work to do and we have to keep working at it," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We are deep. We're a very good team. We're talented. The sky's the limit. We have to stay focused and keep on playing."

Nowitzki scored 24 points and Finley added 20 for Dallas, which lost for the fifth time in six games.

New York outrebounded Dallas, 47-39, and shot 49 percent (40-of-81) from the field as Houston made 14-of-23 and Camby sank 8-of-13 from the floor.

"I have no complaints about the game," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "They played extremely hard. We knew it was going to be difficult to score against them because they are the best defensive team in the league, or right up there. Our effort was great. Houston stepped up and made four big shots. That's a great player that pretty much did us in."

The Knicks held a 75-70 lead after three quarters, but layups by Cedric Ceballos and Nowitzki cut New York's lead to one with 10:41 left.

However, the Knicks scored nine straight points over the next 4:03, capped by Latrell Sprewell's 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 84-74 with under seven minutes remaining.

"We had a great opportunity to win tonight," Finley said. "It just came down to us stopping them and scoring on the other end. Neither one was working for us down the stretch."

Dallas took a 46-45 lead in the third quarter after Gary Trent converted a three-point play with 11:14 left. But Houston, who poured in eight points in the third quarter, started a 9-0 run with a 16-footer and a three-point play. Ewing, who scored 10 points in the third quarter, ended the run by making 1-of-2 free throws with 9:22 to go as New York grabbed a 54-46 lead.

Dallas shot 50 percent (11-of-22) in the first quarter to take a 25-18 lead, but Camby and Houston combined to score 19 of New York's 25 points in the second quarter to tie the score, 43-43, at halftime.

Sprewell scored 15 points and Ewing contributed 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his fourth game since returning from an Achilles' injury.
