Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Juwan Howard had back-to-back baskets to snap a tie with 2:30 to play, lifting the Washington Wizards to a rare home victory, 108-104, over the New Jersey Nets.

Howard finished with 28 points, Mitch Richmond added 22 and Rod Strickland chipped in 17 for the Wizards, who improved the worst home record in the division to 4-8. Washington trailed 95-89 with just under six minutes left but closed the game with a 19-9 run.

"It's great to get a win at home," said Wizard coach Gar Heard. "I think the guys realized tonight if they played hard, like they did, the fans would get behind them and support us. We have to come out and give them something to cheer for. And I think if we keep playing like we did tonight, they'll be behind us. They really played hard tonight."

Keith Van Horn scored 23 points, Stephon Marbury 20 and Kendall Gill 19 for the Nets, who had won four of five. New Jersey has been terrible on the road, losing four straight and nine of 10 this season.

Center Jahidi White had a career night for the Wizards. White, a 6-9 second-year center from Georgetown, replaced Ike Austin in the Wizards' starting lineup and delivered a career-high 19 points and eight rebounds in a career-high 31 minutes. He hit 9-of-11 shots and dominated inside.

"Jahidi really gave us a big lift," added Heard, who blasted his team for playing "soft" in a loss to Utah on Tuesday. "He's getting to be a fan favorite. And he surprised me with the way he stayed out of foul trouble. "He played within himself. He didn't do anything that he couldn't do, and when the ball came to him, he took it to the basket and finished."

While White was playing the biggest game of his brief career, Howard came through with his best game of the year.

"You've got to give Juwan credit," Heard said. "He came out and got us going early, and I think he probably played his best game of the whole year. We overlook his defense and late in the game, we put him on Van Horn and he shut him down."

Van Horn scored eight straight to give New Jersey a 95-89 lead with 6:02 remaining. But the Wizards reeled off seven consecutive points, capped by Richmond's dunk off a steal and feed from Rod Strickland.

Howard hit back-to-back buckets to give the Wizards a 102-98 lead with 1:14 to play before Marbury hit one of two free throws. White then sealed the contest with a three-point play with 52.8 seconds left.

"When I hit that shot late in the game and made the free throw, it just overwhelmed me," White said. "We have to prove to ourselves every night that we know we can do this -- comeback and win games. The only way I know how to play is hard and aggressive, and I want to keep going out there and doing that.

"We need to bring a lot of intensity, a lot of motivation, a lot of camaraderie and just get up for the games and be very intense out there. That's what we need to win. Whatever minutes I get, I'm going to leave my heart out on the court."

New Jersey was red-hot early on, hitting 9-of-11 3-pointers in the first half, the most 3-pointers ever allowed in a half by the Wizards. Despite the sharp shooting, the Nets led just 59-52 at the half.

"In the first half, they just shot the ball," Heard said. "I've been in this league a long time, and I've yet to see too many teams go 9-for-11 from the perimeter. And in the second half, they went 2-for-9. So that's the difference. I told the guys just to make sure they got a hand in their face. And when the game got close, those threes were not falling."

"They were shooting the lights out the whole game," Howard said. "The adjustments we made were down the stretch when we defended them and got some turnovers.
