Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones provided the knockout punch and the Charlotte Hornets rolled to their seventh straight win.

Jones scored 12 points to highlight a decisive 17-0 third-quarter run as the Hornets posted a 99-86 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The win avenged a 106-89 loss at Cleveland on November 27 and kept the Hornets a half-game ahead of Indiana, which beat Utah tonight, in the Central Division. Charlotte owns the top home record in the Eastern Conference at 11-1.

"This is a game that we were looking for revenge after getting blown out up there," Jones said. "The key tonight was just to get a win and not worry about how much we won by."

After a dunk by Shawn Kemp pulled the Cavaliers within 54-53 with 7:30 left in the third quarter, the Hornets scored 17 consecutive points. Jones was unstoppable, hitting a 21-footer, a three-point play, five free throws and a layup.

"Eddie Jones started going to the hoop, penetrating, and making shots," said Hornets coach Paul Silas.

A free throw by rookie forward Eddie Robinson with 3:36 left capped the spurt, which opened a 71-53 lead for the Hornets. The Cavaliers pulled no closer than 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Bobby Phills led Charlotte with 19 points off the bench and Jones finished with 17. Anthony Mason had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets.

"Bobby Phills is getting back in shape," Silas said. "He's playing as expected. Sometimes, we take him for granted because he's so effortless. He's a true pro all the way."

Kemp had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Lamond Murray also scored 15 for the Cavs, who shot just 38 percent from the field and fell to 2-8 on the road.

"We didn't make the shots," said Kemp, who was 6-of-18 from the field. "They played pretty good defense. They played more aggressively and did things to win the game down the stretch. We didn't do that. That's pretty much it."

Charlotte closed the first quarter with a 16-4 run to take a 31-24 lead. David Wesley scored 12 of his 14 points in the quarter to lead the Hornets.

Charlotte held a 46-38 advantage after a three-point play by Jones, but Cleveland closed the half with a 3-pointer by Bob Sura, a pair of free throws by Kemp and a dunk by Mark Bryant to pull within one.

"We weren't playing with any real energy in that second quarter," said Hornets guard Baron Davis. "We started to look real lackadaisical. They got some easy fast break baskets, so at halftime, we wanted to make adjustments and make them execute in their halfcourt offense."

The Cavaliers went 4:23 without a point during Charlotte's decisive run, and hit just 7-of-25 shots overall in the third quarter.

"We can't let a couple of missed shots affect our play," said Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman. "Some of our guys tend to get frustrated when shots stop falling, and we just can't do that."

Wesley Person scored 14 points off the bench for Cleveland.
