Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Orlando Magic to a 112-98 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

With the score tied at 82-82, the Magic opened the fourth with a 14-1 run, taking a 96-83 lead with 7:27 remaining. Atkins scored seven points during the stretch, and Toronto never recovered.

"That was a good win for us all the way around," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers. "It was a real team effort."

Toronto held a 66-55 halftime lead, but went cold after the intermission, hitting only 5-of-19 shots and committing six turnovers to open the third quarter as the Magic stormed back.

"The question lies, can this group of young guys deliver when the heat picks up in the third quarter," said Raptors coach Butch Carter. "They play great as a group, until the opposing team decides that they are a good team and picks up their intensity level."

Monty Williams hit a layup to cap a 12-2 run for Orlando, evening the score at 70-70 with six minutes left. The Magic then pulled away in the fourth quarter with the 14-1 burst.

"We've been in situations before where we've been down by 10 points and come back," said Atkins. "I think what really turned it around for us was our defense. You know that at halftime they came in and had 66 points, that's a lot of points. So we came out and played a little better defense, helped each other out, and we were able to get a big lead."

Vince Carter, who grew up in nearby Daytona Beach, led Toronto with 23 points, but scored only six in the second half.

"It felt good to be here, but you always want to win," he said. "We had a good first half and a below average second half. They got some easy baskets. We were not able to execute on offense and they did."

Tracy McGrady scored 20 points and Antonio Davis added 18 and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who shot 40 percent (36-of-91) en route to their fourth loss in five games.

Orlando's Ben Wallace, who set season highs with 12 points and 14 rebounds, left the game late in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle and did not return. X-rays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day.

Rookie Corey Maggette tied his career-high with 16 points and Williams added 15 for the Magic, who held a 52-45 rebounding edge and hit 43 percent (38-of-89) from the field.
