Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets overtook the Miami Heat for the best record in the Eastern Conference, winning their eighth straight game as Eddie Jones scored 24 points and led a second-half surge to a 106-89 victory.

The Hornets led 70-67 after three quarters and blitzed the Heat with a 22-6 run to open the fourth period. Jones scored eight points during the run, including the first five of the quarter.

"There was no doubt in our minds, we knew we were going to come back," Jones said. "It was just a matter of time before we got some easy baskets and some open looks. Right now I think we're the best team in the East."

Derrick Coleman scored 19 points and Bobby Phils added 18 for the Hornets (16-7), who have their longest winning streak since taking nine in a row last season.

"I'm happy to keep the winning streak going," Hornet coach Paul Silas said. "All that matters, is playing hard, executing the offense and defense and knowing about winning. I think the guys are learning about winning now."

Miami's Alonzo Mourning nearly recorded a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks. However, the Heat (15-8) have lost four straight for the first time since March 26-April 3 of last season.

The Heat led 64-55 with 3:42 remaining in the third period. But Charlotte used a 15-3 run to take a 70-67 lead into the final quarter. Forward Jamal Mashburn had to leave the game at the 5:40 mark after spraining his left ankle and Miami never recovered.

"It was an absolute disaster and an absolute collapse," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We lose Mashburn, then they went quick and small, pressured us, and ran us into the ground. It got away very quick. We got down 10 to 12 points and it just steamrolled from there."

Rookie Eddie Robinson came off the bench to score all 11 of his points in the second half for Charlotte, which shot 45 percent (38-of-85), including 6-of-13 from 3-point range.

Anthony Carter, who has done an admirable job replacing injured star point guard Tim Hardaway, scored 10 points and added 10 assists for Miami, which shot 45 percent (37-of-82) but was outrebounded, 50-36.
