Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Kelvin Cato came off the bench and had career highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Houston Rockets snap a five-game losing streak with a 100-94 victory over the slumping Boston Celtics.

Cato, a fourth-year forward out of Iowa State, came to Houston in the blockbuster offseason deal for the disgruntled Scottie Pippen. He entered tonight averaging seven points per game but was hot from the start and finished 11-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-7 at the line.

"I had a lot of high-percentage shots tonight. The 13 shots I took might be the most I've ever taken in a game," Cato said. "I just want to play whenever I get an opportunity. Right now I'd rather come off the bench because I'm not used to starting."

Cuttino Mobley scored 21 points off the bench for Houston, whose reserves outscored Boston's backups by a 55-28 margin. The Rockets avoided their first six-game skid of the season and avenged a 100-96 loss at the FleetCenter on December 10.

"Down the stretch I just wanted to keep the ball and dribble it like (Celtics legend) Bob Cousy," Mobley said. "I knew they would foul me and I'd get to go to the line. Right now it doesn't matter to me (if I start), I just want to come out and be aggressive off the bench."

"This a really big win for us," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We had played some good games recently and not received any tangible rewards. I'm happy for our guys, we got a lot of good performances off the bench."

Antoine Walker scored 24 points and Kenny Anderson added 23 for the Celtics, who have lost a season-high five straight games since losing leading scorer Paul Pierce to an ankle injury.

"I made up my mind that I'm not going to get frustrated this year. This kind of basketball is not going to break me," Boston coach Rick Pitino said.

"I've been through this situation with New Jersey," Anderson added. "You've got to keep plugging away and be professional about it. When you're losing, you start second-guessing yourself and you can't do that."

The Celtics appeared out of contention early in the fourth quarter but made an 11-0 run to pull within 86-80 with 5:41 to play. Houston responded with a 7-0 run, capped by Mobley's 3-pointer with 4:19 left that opened a 93-80 cushion.

Carlos Rogers scored 17 points and rookie Steve Francis added 15, six rebounds and four assists for Houston, which shot 45 percent (34-of-76) and held a 48-38 advantage on the boards.

Adrian Griffin had 13 points and nine rebounds and buried a pair of free throws to give Boston a 39-38 lead with 2:33 remaining in the first half. Rookie Kenny Thomas hit a 22-footer and Mobley followed with a 3-pointer before Cato dunked to give the Rockets a 45-39 lead at the half.

Tony Battie made two free throws to give the Celtics a 51-50 lead early in the third quarter. But Cato capped a 9-0 run with a three-point play, dunking over Battie with 6:21 left in the period and hitting the ensuing free throw to make it 59-51. The Rockets never trailed thereafter.

Calbert Cheaney had 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Boston, which shot 49 percent (39-of-80) and yielded just eight points off turnovers.

Cato's dunk with 10:13 to play gave Houston what appeared to be a comfortable 80-66 lead. The margin swelled to 17 before the Celtics made their run.

Boston pulled within 94-90 on a 3-pointer by Walker with 1:27 to go but Mobley and Francis combined to make 4-of-6 foul shots down the stretch.

"We came back and we got the lead in the third quarter, but we missed some tough shots down the stretch and they hit their free throws," Walker said. "We've got to fight through these injuries. Were going home and we got to find a way to get a win there and get off this losing streak."
