Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- No matter who the coach is, the Vancouver Grizzlies just cannot win.

Gary Payton scored 26 points and moved up in the SuperSonics' record book as Seattle spoiled Lionel Hollins' debut as coach with a 112-89 victory over the Grizzlies.

Hollins was promoted from assistant Thursday when Brian Hill was fired in the wake of Vancouver's dismal 4-18 start. His debut was not a pleasant one as the Grizzlies dropped to 2-15 all-time against the Sonics and 0-8 in Seattle.

Payton moved past Jack Sikma into second place on the Sonics' all-time scoring list with 12,043 points. Fred Brown holds the franchise mark with 14,018.

Vin Baker scored 15 points and Ruben Patterson added 14 and 11 rebounds for Seattle, which shot 48 percent (37-of-77) from the floor and won for the third time in four games.

"If we can continue racking up the wins against the teams we're supposed to beat, when the playoffs start, it will all be 0-0." Baker said. "We're taking care of the business we need to. We really hit the boards and ran the floor."

Seattle finished 3-1 on its four-game homestand and is 10-3 at KeyArena this season.

"Defensively, we started trapping a little more and offensively, we just tried to execute what we're supposed to do a little better," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "We got better ball movement and it payed off."

In the second half, the Sonics outscored the Grizzlies, 66-43, and shot 50 percent (19-of-38) from the floor. Seattle gained a 45-32 rebounding advantage overall.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 25 points and Michael Dickerson added 14 as Vancouver dropped its fifth straight game. The Grizzlies shot 44 percent (31-of-70) from the floor.

"We did come out and played hard and we played with a lot of energy," Hollins said. "We couldn't make shots in the half-court offense. We stayed in the game in the second half and Seattle stepped out and trapped us at half-court just about every time."

"It's the start of a new beginning," Abdur-Rahim said. "It's not the start we would have wanted but we've got something to build off of. Right now, I'm excited to be playing for coach Hollins. I'm not discouraged at all."

Patterson scored six points during a 14-2 run as Seattle opened a 62-50 cushion with 5:57 left in the third quarter. No team had more than a six-point lead prior to that point.

Dennis Scott buried a 3-pointer to pull Vancouver within 68-63 with 64 seconds left in the quarter. Seattle closed the period with six straight points to open a 74-63 cushion as Payton and Brent Barry each scored three points in that stretch.

The Sonics put away the game with a 12-5 run to open the fourth period for an 86-68 lead with 8:12 left. Vernon Maxwell hit a pair of 3-pointers in that spurt.

Payton scored 15 points in the first half and Abdur-Rahim netted 12 as the game was tied, 46-46, at halftime.
