Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Lionel Hollins got his first NBA coaching win as Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to give the Vancouver Grizzlies a hard-fought 85-84 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Hollins was promoted from assistant Thursday when Brian Hill was fired in the wake of Vancouver's dismal 4-18 start. He lost his debut Saturday at Seattle.

"I was a nervous wreck the last 48 hours", Hollins said. "Today I was more relaxed. I told the team let's go out with some energy and let it flow.

"Today is just the start, it's just one win," Hollins continued. "We didn't play that great, but we did the things that are necessary to win and that's a good starting point. Hopefully, we can build on this from a confidence perspective."

Abdur-Rahim scored 20 points, including the Grizzlies' last three from the line after being fouled on consecutive possessions by Los Angeles forward Maurice Taylor.

"This is a big big win for us," Abdur-Rahim said. "One, to get the monkey off our backs and two, because everyone wanted to get the win for the coach."

The Clippers took an 84-82 lead on Tyrone Nesby's 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining but were held scoreless thereafter. Taylor missed a four-foot jumper with 39 seconds left and, after fouling Abdur-Rahim, misfired on a six-footer with 2.9 seconds to go.

Michael Dickerson added 26 points for Vancouver, which snapped a seven-game home losing streak and a five-game overall skid.

Los Angeles took a 73-67 lead on a short jumper by Odom with 9:32 remaining. But Vancouver scored the next nine points to take a 76-73 advantage with 6:09 left. Dickerson, who shot 10-of-19 from the field, had five points during the run.

Taylor, who scored eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, hit a layup and a 21-foot jumper on the Clippers' next two possessions to go ahead 77-76 at the 5:11 mark. Dickerson hit a driving layup to extend the lead to 82-79 with 2:36 remaining. Two free throws by Taylor made the score 82-81 at the 1:39 mark.

Standout rookie Lamar Odom scored 24 points for Los Angeles, but fouled out when Doug West drew a charge with 2:36 remaining. Odom also missed six free throws, including four in the last quarter.

"If I'm in the game, I definitely up the percentages of us winning," Odom said. "If I make five free throws, we probably win by three."

Tyrone Nesby added 16 points for the Clippers, who shot 46 percent (32-of-69) from the floor but just 59 percent (13-of-22) from the line.

"We had our opportunites at the foul line and we didin't take advantage of it," Clippers' coach Chris Ford said. "Mo Taylor played his heart out. I can't fault the guys efforts. (Vancouver) got the benefit of a couple of calls in the end and we didn't."

Mike Bibby added 13 points and six assists for the Grizzlies, who shot only 40 percent (30-of-75) but outrebounded Los Angeles 46-35.

The game featured 18 lead changes and was close from start to finish, as neither team led by more than six points throughout.
