Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal collected 34 points and 20 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 27 points as the Los Angeles Lakers completed a perfect road trip with a 99-90 victory over the struggling Boston Celtics.

O'Neal connected on 13-of-20 shots from the floor and a typical 8-of-17 from the line. He had just two assists, but the second was as big as any of his points.

The Lakers held an 89-86 lead when O'Neal had the ball in the low post and delivered a no-look pass to a cutting Robert Horry, who made the layup and subsequent free throw after being fouled with 2:31 to go.

"I knew (Celtics coach Rick) Pitino would come at me with that crazy `Monkey Man D,'" O'Neal said. "I remember facing him in college, I knew it was coming. I just used my size tonight pretty well."

Bryant made 9-of-17 shots and all eight of his free throws as the Lakers completed a 4-0 road trip, extended their winning streak to seven games and won for the 14th time in their last 15 contests.

"I thought we were more mentally tired than physically tired," said Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson. "We have to be pleased with what we've done, considering we've had four games in five days."

Derek Fisher scored 13 points off the bench for Los Angeles, which shot 52 percent (34-of-65) to overcome 24 turnovers.

"You don't play many games with 24 turnovers and get a win, but I really thought we adjusted in that fourth quarter, committing only two," Lakers forward Rick Fox said. "That was probably the key to the game."

Antoine Walker scored 24 points and Kenny Anderson added 21 and 10 assists for Boston, which led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before suffering its sixth straight defeat.

"This is only 24 games, we're not panicking, we know the chemistry in here is good," Walker said. "We're just not making all the plays we need to make, but give the Lakers credit. They're one heckuva veteran ballcub. They know how to execute when the game's on the line."

Boston scored the first 12 points of the third quarter and took a 55-44 lead on a layup by Walker with 8:16 to go. Walker scored eight points in that stretch.

The Lakers missed their first six shots in the period before O'Neal made layup with 7:48 left. Ron Harper drove for a layup, his only basket, to cut Boston's lead to 55-48 with 6:56 to go. Boston pushed the margin to 65-52 when Cheaney hit a driving layup with 4:31 left.

"We got completely out of whack for about two minutes in that third quarter," Jackson said. "At the end of the third, though, I thought we did a good job."

Bryant dunked to cut the deficit to 65-53 with 3:53 remaining and ignited a 15-4 run that ended the quarter. O'Neal had six of points and Bryant five.

The score was tied five times in the fourth period before Fisher's 3-pointer from the right corner put the Lakers ahead for good, 79-76, with 7:07 left.
