Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller matched a season high with 31 points and won his duel with Gary Payton as the Indiana Pacers used a 3-point barrage for a 113-103 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics, their seventh straight home win.

Miller scored 10 points in the pivotal third quarter, when the Pacers turned a nine-point halftime lead into an 85-70 advantage heading into the final period. Guarded by Payton at times, Miller shot 12-of-19 from the field and made 6-of-10 3-pointers.

"I thought Reggie was moving extremely well off the picks," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We set some good picks, he got open and there was no hesitation."

As a team, Indiana shot 12-of-24 from behind the arc and seemed to make a 3-pointer whenever Seattle got close. During one stretch of the fourth quarter, the Pacers made five consecutive 3-pointers.

"The Pacers shot the ball well from the 3-point line. It was hard to keep up," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "We made them shoot the 3, but unfortunately they kept hitting it. Reggie had a great game, but he also had a lot of help."

Sam Perkins scored a season-high 19 points and Jalen Rose added 19 and a season-high 11 assists for Indiana, which has not lost at Conseco Fieldhouse since Thanksgiving and ended a three-game skid to Seattle. Overall, the Pacers shot 53 percent (46-of-87) from the field as they avenged a 102-91 loss in Seattle on November 28.

"I think we still have a lot of work to do because teams are not afraid of us," said Perkins, a former Sonic. "The last couple of seasons we've kind of established ourselves. This is a new year and a new team. We are beginning to belnd together and we know we can beat good teams in this league."

Indiana improved to 9-2 against the powerful Western Conference with seven straight winss.

Payton did all he could to keep the SuperSonics in it, scoring 28 points and handing out 12 assists. He had 12 points in the third quarter but did not get much help from his teammates as Seattle fell to 1-1 on a three-game road trip.

"Our defense (stunk)," Payton said. "We didn't cover our assignments the way we practiced. You'd think we could get it right. We've only been doing this since October. I just chalk it up to one of those nights when we played like we were brain-locked."

Vin Baker scored 24 points and Vernon Maxwell added 17 for the Sonics but combined for just two points in the third period.

The Pacers took the lead for good late in the first quarter and Perkins scored eight points in the second quarter as Indiana opened a 55-46 halftime lead.

"We needed Sam tonight," Bird said. "Sam came in and opened it up. When he gets an open look out there he's got to take it."

Rose took control early in the third period, scoring six points in an 8-0 burst that extended the advantage to 63-46 with 8:55 remaining.

Miller made 3-pointers around a jumper by Seattle's Horace Grant to give Indiana its largest lead at 71-52 with 6:56 to play. Payton scored 12 of his team's 18 points in the remainder of the period but a pair of jumpers by Miller helped the Pacers take a 15-point lead into the final 12 minutes.

Miller opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer over Payton before the Sonics made one last push, closing to 92-81 on a free throw by Payton with 7:33 to go. Miller responded with a 3-pointer, beginning Indiana's long-range attack.

Perkins made 3-pointers around one by Travis Best before Miller hit another for a 107-92 lead with 3:09 to go.

Dale Davis had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who had a season-high 32 assists and just 10 turnovers. Mark Jackson handed out 11 assists.

Brent Barry had 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds and Grant added 10 and 10 for the Sonics, who shot 46 percent (39-of-85), including 8-of-19 from behind the arc.
