Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Mario Elie stole a win from the Phoenix Suns.

Elie stopped a potential game-winning fast break with a steal, drew a foul and made a free throw with 3.1 seconds left in overtime to give the San Antonio Spurs a 91-90 victory over the Suns, who lost for the first time in five games under new coach Scott Skiles.

An airball by Jason Kidd, who shot just 6-of-26 from the field but nevertheless notched his third triple-double in four games, gave the Spurs possession in a tie game with 25 seconds left. Avery Johnson missed a jumper with seven seconds to go and the long rebound was tracked down by Rex Chapman, who headed the other way with Kidd at his side.

"Rex had it and thought we could get down the court in three seconds," Kidd said. "We were ready to call a timeout but when we saw Rex put it on the floor, we thought we were going downcourt with it."

Elie reached in from the blind side and stole the ball near the 3-point arc. Chapman fouled Elie before he could shoot and Elie made the first free throw. He missed the second, but Phoenix's Oliver Miller tipped the rebound to the perimeter. Johnson ran it down and dribbled out the clock.

"I didn't think he saw me from the blind side so I went for the steal," said Elie, who scored 10 points. "I was surprised he fouled me."

"I should have called a timeout but I saw David Robinson out of the corner of my eye and I saw Jason Kidd running and I thought maybe with him running we could do something," Chapman said. "It all just happened so fast. That really ended up costing us the game."

The "Twin Towers" dominated the smaller Suns as Tim Duncan had 25 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks and David Robinson had 21, 15 and four for the Spurs, who improved to a league-best 12-1 at home.

"We played the kind of defense we haven't played for a while," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

"We played more consistent defense tonight," Robinson said. "We did a much better job."

Cliff Robinson scored 26 points before fouling out and Chapman added 19 for the Suns, who again played without four injured starters and fell to 4-1 under Skiles. Skiles took over after Danny Ainge resigned eight days ago.

In 51 minutes, Kidd collected 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 29th career triple-double, moving into a tie with Detroit's Grant Hill for the lead among active players and fourth place on the all-time list. Larry Bird is third with 59, Magic Johnson second with 138 and Oscar Robertson first with 178.

"Jason Kidd looks like three guys out there," Elie said. "I love the way he plays."

"He's playing so well right now and we are relying on him so much," Skiles said. "We know we are shorthanded right now and a lot of times guys respond to that. Guys tend to scramble more and hustle even more. This team just follows Jason Kidd, who is all over the floor."

Kidd's 3-pointer with 6.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave Phoenix an 80-80 tie. Johnson missed a jumper in the lane as regulation time expired.

Two baskets by Duncan and two free throws by Johnson opened the extra session and gave the Spurs an 86-80 lead with 3:56 to go. Kidd had a layup and two foul shots in a 7-1 surge that forged an 87-87 deadlock with 2:07 remaining.

Robinson made 1-of-2 from the line with 1:12 left but Chapman answered with a high-arcing jumper while drawing a foul. His free throw gave Phoenix a 90-88 edge with 1:03 to play before Robinson tipped in Terry Porter's missed layup with 43 seconds left.

"If I was open, I was gonna take the shot," Chapman said. "If not, try to get fouled. I was able to pump-fake and just threw it up."

Johnson had 13 points and seven assists for the Spurs, who shot 38 percent (33-of-87) and overcame 21 turnovers. San Antonio held a 55-52 rebounding edge.

Rodney Rogers scored 10 points and Miller grabbed 12 rebounds for the Suns, who shot 37 percent (34-of-92), including 9-of-22 from 3-point range.

David Robinson scored 13 points and Duncan 12 as San Antonio opened a 48-41 halftime lead. Cliff Robinson scored seven points in a 14-0 burst, including two free throws that capped the run and gave Phoenix a 64-56 lead with 1:34 to go in the third quarter.

The Suns still held a 72-65 lead after a tip-in by Miller with 8:18 left in the fourth quarter but the Spurs battled back and took a 78-77 lead on Elie's 22-footer with 31 seconds to play. Kidd threw away a pass and Porter made two free throws to set up Kidd's tying shot.
