Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Monty Williams scored seven of his 15 points in the final three minutes as the Orlando Magic extended their season-high winning streak to five games with a 110-106 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Anthony Mason's layup with 3:25 remaining lifted Charlotte into a 100-100 tie. But Williams converted a three-point play 19 seconds later to put the Magic ahead for good, 103-100.

After Bobby Phills missed a 16-footer, Williams made a layup to extend Orlando's advantage to 105-100 with 2:02 remaining. Phills, who scored 17 points off the bench, answered with a three-point play to move Charlotte within two with 1:31 to go. But Williams sank two free throws with 1:15 left to make it 107-103.

Derrick Coleman's layup with 31 seconds left again trimmed the margin to two. Orlando's Chucky Atkins made one free throw with 27 seconds left. He missed the second, but Coleman lost the rebound out of bounds.

Darrell Armstrong, who led Orlando with 28 points and 10 assists, sank two free throws with 24 seconds left to seal the victory.

"The worst thing now is that we have three days off," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "We're on a roll and I wish we could play tomorrow."

After an eight-game winning streak, the Hornets have dropped two in a row and fell to 11-2 at home. Charlotte played without leading scorer Eddie Jones, who is out three to six weeks with a torn ligament in his left elbow.

Orlando raced to a 15-4 lead and extended to a 19-point advantage on Corey Maggette's layup with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

"We did not match Orlando's energy early on in the game," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "They were running on us and we weren't getting back on defense. We dug ourselves a hole."

Charlotte ended the opening period with a 9-0 run as rookie Baron Davis scored four points and Mason three. Ricky Davis' driving layup with one second left got Charlotte within 33-23.

The Hornets carried that momentum into the second quarter, opening with a 12-2 burst. Brad Miller scored five of his seven points in the run, and Baron Davis' layup tied it at 35-35 with 8:46 left.

Ricky Davis' dunk with 8:06 to play before halftime gave the Hornets their first lead, 39-38. Ben Wallace, who had 14 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots, scored on follow shot with two-tenths of a second left to allow Orlando to take a 57-55 lead into intermission.

Orlando shot 46 percent (40-86) from the field, including 57 percent (8-of-14) in the fourth quarter, and made 7-of-11 from 3-point range as Armstrong drained six from beyond the arc. The Magic outrebounded Charlotte, 51-43.

"This team is really learning and gelling together real well," Armstrong said. "We don't care who shoots the ball. This is the style that Doc has brought to this team. This is the style of the players that we have."

The Hornets made 41 percent (40-of-96) of their shots, but were 0-of-8 from 3-point range.
