Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn had 25 points and 12 rebounds as the New Jersey Nets withstood a strong performance by Allen Iverson and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, 99-94.

Van Horn, who entered the game shooting just 40.5 percent, made 11-of-18 shots from the floor and was 2-of-2 at the line. Stephon Marbury had 21 points and seven assists and Kerry Kittles established season highs with 21 points and eight rebounds for New Jersey, which has won seven of its last 10 games.

Iverson scored 42 points, falling four short of his season high. He was 11-of-26 from the field and 17-of-20 at the line. The Sixers trailed, 96-94, when Iverson missed a jumper from the right corner with 38.1 seconds left.

Asked about falling behind early, Iverson said, "We've been having that problem all year long. We've been getting down on teams, but nine times out of 10 for an NBA basketball team it is going to be difficult to come back once you put yourself in that predicament."

Iverson, who was involved in a minor car accident this afternoon, has scored at least 40 points 10 times in his career, but Philadelphia is 1-9 in those games.

"It wasn't a big deal and you guys are making it more than it is. I'll have my car back in a week," he said.

Van Horn grabbed the rebound of Iverson's miss and sent the ball down the other end, where Kendall Gill took a pass from Kittles and hit a jumper from the right corner to give the Nets a 98-94 lead with 14 seconds to go. Gill was only 3-of-10 before that basket.

"We played really well tonight," Van Horn said. "We protected the paint as well. Kendall makes a huge shot and we were happy with the way we held up."

"You guys think I was struggling," Gill said. "You don't score 10,000 points in this league if you're struggling. I told Kerry to look for me and he got it and I got a good look."

Tyrone Hill had 14 points and 13 rebounds and George Lynch added 13 and eight for Philadelphia.

Kittles scored 18 points in the first half, making 3-of-4 3-pointers, as the Nets held a 53-43 lead.

"We came out slow in the first half, they beat us off the dribble and we gave them chances to run," said Philadelphia coach Larry Brown. "The timing on our shot selection was too quick. We'd get offensive rebounds and force shots up too quick. We kept fighting in the second half, made some great runs, but give them credit, they played a strong game."

Lynch made three straight baskets during an 8-0 tear that cut the Sixers' deficit to 58-53 with 6:52 left in the third period. But Gill responded with a 19-footer and Jim McIlvaine followed with a hook shot to give the Nets a 62-53 advantage. New Jersey carried a 74-64 edge into the fourth.

Gill, who was 0-for-3 in the first half, made a driving layup to start the final period. The Sixers followed with nine straight points, trimming the deficit to 76-73 with 9:02 to go opn a running jumper by Larry Hughes.

Philadelphia closed within 82-81 on two free throws by Hughes with 6:07 remaining. But after Gill had his shot blocked by Hughes, Jamie Feick sank a 21-footer to give the Nets an 84-81 edge. Van Horn's layup made it 86-81 with 4:38 to go.
