Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace scored 15 of his 20 points in the first half as the Portland Trail Blazers cruised to their 20th win before Christmas, 111-91 over the overmatched Golden State Warriors.

Wallace sank 8-of-12 shots and 4-of-7 free throws and did all of his scoring over the first three quarters as this one turned into a laugher down the stretch. The 6-11 power forward staked Portland to a 54-37 halftime advantage it did not surrender.

Steve Smith scored 19 points and Brian Grant and Damon Stoudamire added 12 apiece for Portland (20-7), which pulled within two games of the Los Angeles Lakers (22-5) for the best record in the NBA. The Blazers and Lakers are the only teams that will celebrate Christmas with 20 wins.

"Obviously it was a good win," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We defended well, moved the ball well and had a lot of energy, but we want it to carry over after a couple of days off. The schedule helped us in the sense that it gave us a couple of days off over the holidays and then we will have a couple of good practices before the next game (Tuesday vs. Seattle)."

"We were playing with the flow because we are getting up and pressuring and making teams play with a lot of movement," Smith added. "We came out and played consistently today, trying to box out, get a win and get ready for Christmas."

Portland improved to 8-3 at home with its fourth straight win over Golden State at the Rose Garden.

John Starks and Donyell Marshall had 18 points apiece for the Warriors, who have lost four of five since a season-high three-game winning streak.

"If you can believe it, I think we played more poorly Wednesday night in our four-point loss to the (Los Angeles) Clippers," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We thought the first five minutes of the game would be very important and Portland got off well and kept the defensive pressure up."

Greg Anthony had 10 points off the bench for Portland, which raced to a 25-18 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

"We needed to win in this fashion to build our confidence up about who we are," Grant said. "What's our identity and know how we are going to play and how we want other teams to think about us."

Rookie Vonteego Cummings got Golden State off to a good start with back-to-back jumpers and Starks' 3-pointer gave Golden State a 7-2 lead with 9:40 remaining in the first quarter.

But Wallace and Stoudamire scored six points apiece during a 20-3 run as Portland pulled ahead for good, 20-9, on Wallace's slam with 4:20 left in the first period.

Scottie Pippen had nine points and six assists for Portland, which shot 48 percent (37-of-77) and held a 40-35 advantage on the boards.

"We understand it wasn't a big challenge for us tonight," Pippen said. "But we also wanted to come out and have a good game on our part. We can't feel too sorry for them."

Jason Caffey scored 10 points for the Warriors, who shot 42 percent (37-of-89) and yielded just nine points off 11 turnovers.
