Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 26 points and Dale Davis and Sam Perkins added 14 apiece as the Indiana Pacers took charge in the third quarter and cooled off the New York Knicks, 101-90, in the latest renewal of their heated rivalry.

With the game tied, 50-50, the Knicks fell apart in the third quarter as they committed six turnovers and seven fouls and shot 35 percent (7-of-20) from the field. Davis scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the period as Indiana grabbed a 73-64 advantage.

"It wasn't a matter of momentum, we just weren't playing well," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We didn't make a good adjustment to knowing that the game would be called tighter."

Allan Houston's basket cut the margin lead to 76-72 with 10:16 left in the fourth quarter, but the Pacers bench provided the game-breaking run by scoring the next seven points. Travis Best sank a 21-footer, Austin Croshere made two free throws and Chris Mullin's 3-pointer with 8:29 to play extended Indiana's lead to 85-72. The Knicks got no closer than nine thereafter.

"This was a huge, huge win for us and could be a great statement game for us," Miller said. "We had not been beating the upper echelon teams."

Led by 14 points from Perkins and 13 from Croshere, the Pacers reserves outscored the Knicks bench, 42-23.

Indiana won for the fourth time in five games and moved into first place in the Central Division, one-half game ahead of idle Charlotte.

Tempers flared with just under nine minutes left in the third quarter when New York forward Kurt Thomas threw a couple of forearms and a punch at Indiana guard Jalen Rose. Both players were ejected.

"It's unfortunate," Rose said. "I've seen the replay and I'm disappointed I wasn't able to play the second half. Obviously, I'll let the league handle it after they see what they see. I didn't feel like I did anything."

Latrell Sprewell scored 23 points and Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson contributed 16 apiece for the Knicks. Plagued by foul trouble throughout, Houston was held to 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

This was the first meeting between the teams since New York eliminated the Pacers in six games in the Eastern Conference finals. Indiana has won the last three regular season games against New York and four straight at home.

Sprewell scored 13 points in the first quarter, including 11 in the opening 4:51, as New York took a 28-22 lead.

"We got off to a slow start because we were missing shots, but we were playing hard and playing well defensively," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We've been playing pretty good basketball of late and when we play hard we usually win."

Led by Miller's nine points in the second quarter, Indiana opened a six-point lead before a late 8-2 run lifted the Knicks into a 50-50 tie at the intermission.

With several Knicks in foul trouble, Indiana attempted 40 free throws and made 32, including 12-of-14 by Miller. New York went to the line 25 times and sank only 15.
