Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- On Boxing Day, it was Vince Carter who provided the knockout punch for the Toronto Raptors.

Carter scored 13 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter as the Raptors handed the Cleveland Cavaliers their season-high seventh straight loss, 98-95.

Carter, who came within three points of his career high set earlier this season, added eight assists as Toronto won for only the third time in nine games.

"We just had to maintain and do what we had to do, continue to execute and make some shots," he said. "I was just feeling comfortable and coach believes I can make a good decision, whether to pass the ball or make the open shot."

Andrew DeClercq's basket capped a 9-0 run as the Cavaliers opened an 86-77 lead with 4:58 remaining. But Carter scored six points in an 11-0 burst, including a 20-footer with 1:29 left that put Toronto in front, 88-86.

Shawn Kemp sank two free throws to tie it 16 seconds later, but Carter drained a 3-pointer with 52 seconds to play to give the Raptors a 91-88 advantage.

"He's their money player and we couldn't stop him," Cleveland guard Bob Sura said.

Two free throws by Sura cut the margin to one, but Charles Oakley's 11-footer off a beautiful pass from Carter gave Toronto a 93-90 lead with 22 seconds remaining.

"He had one of his better fourth quarters, but he made plays for the whole team," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "He took the ball to the basket and made one mistake when he ran out of bounds. That was his only mistake."

After a missed 3-pointer by Cleveland's Lamond Murray, Antonio Davis made 1-of-2 free throws to give Toronto a 94-90 lead with 14 seconds left.

Brevin Knight made 1-of-2 from the line for the Cavs before Doug Christie scored the last of his 20 points on two free throws with 12.1 seconds to play to seal the win.

"Toronto made some plays down the stretch which really broke our back," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "We had a nine-point lead with 5 1/2 minutes to go, but we couldn't make a play or score a basket to get us over the hump."

The Raptors shot 45 percent (35-of-77) from the field, but it was free-throw shooting that proved the difference as they made 24-of-25, including 11-of-11 by Carter.

Murray and Sura scored 20 points apiece for Cleveland, which is in the midst of its longest losing streak since dropping seven in a row last April 17-29.

Kemp made only 2-of-14 shots and was held to 12 points but grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds for the Cavaliers. As a team, Cleveland shot 36 percent (32-of-88) from the field, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range.

Toronto led 46-40 at halftime, but the Cavaliers moved within 51-50 on a layup by Murray with 7:48 left in the third quarter. The Raptors responded with a 12-4 run over the next 2:42 as Davis had five points. Muggsy Bogues' 17-footer gave Toronto a 63-54 lead with 5:06 to play.

Cleveland got within 69-66 on a 3-pointer by Andre Miller with 1:13 to go. Carter scored eight points in the period, including his team's last four, as Toronto clung to a 71-68 lead.

Carter scored six points in the first quarter, helping Toronto to a 20-16 lead. The Raptors extended to a 41-29 advantage in the second period on a 3-pointer by Alvin Williams, but Cleveland got to 43-37 on a 3-pointer by Sura with 50 seconds left.

Although the Cavs shot just 27 percent (13-of-47) in the first half, they trailed only 46-40.
