Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber scored 31 points and Jason Williams added 23 as the Sacramento Kings nearly wasted a 23-point lead but posted their fifth straight home win over the Dallas Mavericks, 118-111.

Dallas went on a 22-8 run to climb within 105-98 with 5:43 left. Michael Finley scored seven points in that spurt and Gary Trent and Dirk Nowitzki added six.

But Vlade Divac made a short hook shot and Webber sank two free throws to put the Kings ahead by 11 with 4:24 remaining. They went on to their second win in six games.

"It's always a combination (of hot shooting and poor defense) when a team makes a run like that," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "Fortunately, we were able to answer each time, especially down the stretch."

Webber made 12-of-23 shots from the floor and Williams 8-of-14 to help the Kings shoot 56 percent (47-of-84). Scot Pollard scored 13 points and Divac grabbed 13 rebounds for Sacramento, which has not lost at home to Dallas since March 16, 1997.

"I think sometimes we get a lead and we play not to lose instead of to win, but like I said, we'll learn," Williams said.

Finley scored 23 points and Trent added 20 as the Mavs lost for the fifth time in six contests.

"We just didn't have any energy," Finley said. "We came out flat and it cost us. You can't win in this league playing one half. I don't care who you are, especially if you give them such a comfortable zone in the first half."

"We're just so flat, our defense was terrible," Trent added. "I'm not going to say it was terrible in the first half because it was terrible the whole game. We need to put two halves together, not three quarters, not 2 1/2, but four solid quarters together from jump ball to the final dead ball."

Dallas shot 46 percent (46-of-101) from the floor and lost for the third time in four road games. The Mavericks outscored Sacramento, 33-21, in the final quarter to make it close but never led.

The Kings used a 21-7 first-quarter spurt to gain a 39-19 lead with 59 seconds left. Nick Anderson scored six points in that run while Webber and Williams added five apiece.

The lead grew to 65-42 with 2:21 remaining in the first half, thanks to a 20-6 run as Pollard scored six points. Webber finished the half with 15 as the Kings led, 70-49.
