Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 23 points and Grant Hill added 20 as the Detroit Pistons climbed back to the .500 mark with a 91-77 victory over the lowly Chicago Bulls.

Detroit took a 21-point lead early in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by former Bull Jud Buechler, but a dunk by rookie Elton Brand with 3:28 left cut the Pistons' lead to 82-74. Stackhouse responded with a 3-pointer as Detroit went on a 7-1 run over the next 2:53 to put away the game.

"It's a great win for us tonight," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "It's a road win and we'll take every one of those we can get.

The Pistons shot 36 percent (29-of-80) from the field but made 29-of-36 free throws to win their second straight game and for just the fifth time in 15 road games. Detroit has won four of six overall to improve to 14-14.

B.J. Armstrong scored a season-high 22 points and Brand added 17 and a career-high five blocked shots for Chicago, which committed a season-high 27 turnovers en route to its ninth consecutive loss overall and fifth straight at the United Center.

"I think our guys got a little excited out there and I think our inexperience showed," Armstrong said.

Despite shooting only 28 percent (6-of-21) in the third quarter, the Pistons built an 18-point lead as they went to the line 18 times and made 15. Detroit also scored seven points off nine Chicago turnovers and moved out to a 70-52 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

"We held them to 36 percent shooting but it wasn't good enough to win because of turnovers," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We have to learn to play through mistakes. We were a little better taking care of the ball in the second half but there were strecthes where turnovers broke the stand."

Detroit led 19-18 after one quarter, but extended its lead to 11 as Stackhouse, who had nine points in the period, sank two free throws with 43 seconds left to give the Pistons a 42-31 cushion at the half. The Bulls committed 17 turnovers in the first half.

Khalid Reeves, signed by Chicago before the game, scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in 14 minutes.
