Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Kelvin Cato had 21 points to lead six scorers in double figures and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Houston Rockets bounced back from a tough home loss by burying the Los Angeles Clippers, 122-100.

The victory margin was the largest this season for the struggling Rockets (10-20), who already have surpassed their loss total of a season ago. Houston suffered a 100-99 loss here to Toronto on Tuesday and improved to just 5-11 at the Compaq Center this season.

Cato hit 9-of-12 shots and did not commit a turnover as the Rockets, who had their finest effort of the season.

The backcourt duo of rookie Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley combined for 35 points and 22 assists as Houston pulled away early and never looked back in posting its sixth straight home win against Los Angeles.

"We played hard the whole time and kept it up even when we had the big lead," Cato said. "Mobley was on fire. We all played hard tonight and shot the ball well. Steve passed the ball real well and even the guys came off the bench and kept it going for us."

Carlos Rogers scored 10 of his 15 points in the first quarter, when Houston opened a 36-23 lead. Shandon Anderson and Walt Williams added 16 points apiece for the Rockets, who had dropped eight of 10.

"Boy did we need one like this and I love the way we did it too," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We passed the ball real well. I loved the way Steve and Cuttino played tonight, scoring and really throwing the ball around and making things happen. Cato really shut them down defensively. This will help us with our confidence."

Maurice Taylor scored a career-high 31 points and Eric Piatkowski added 24 off the bench for the Clippers, who were denied their 10th win of the season. Los Angeles won only nine games in the lockout-shortened campaign.

"Everybody got in to play tonight and that's the only good thing that came out of this one," Taylor said before directing his criticism at center Michael Olowokandi, who managed only four points in 25 minutes.

"He's not really doing anything right now," Taylor said of last season's top overall pick. "He's not protecting the basket. I don't know what everyone else is saying about this, but you can't go out there and win with four guys playing. You have to fight and all of us aren't fighting."

Mobley had 16 points, a season-high 11 assists and seven rebounds, committing just one turnover in 35 minutes. Francis had 19 points, 11 assists and two steals in 33 minutes, giving Houston a deadly 1-2 backcourt punch all night.

"We're trying to put it all together, trying to play as a team," Mobley said. "It means a lot to win like this. It does help our confidence. I hope a game like this can jump-start us. I've said it all along, I think Steve and I should step up and carry this team."

Tyrone Nesby scored 12 points and rookie Lamar Odom had 10 on dreadful 2-of-13 shooting for the Clippers. Los Angeles shot 45 percent and yielded 24 points off 15 turnovers.

"We got blown out and that was one of our worst performances of the year," Odom said. "It's too bad we had to go out like this. We need to keep playing hard. We didn't shoot well. I was only 2-for-13. Nobody played well. Taylor was out there by himself on offense."

The Rockets shot 53 percent (50-of-94), held a 47-38 advantage on the boards and committed 10 turnovers.

Mobley opened the game by hitting a 3-pointer. Anderson and Cato made layups and Rogers hit a short hook shot in the lane as Houston jumped to a 9-2 lead.

Los Angeles never led but pulled even at 17-17 with 5:46 left in the first quarter after Taylor hit a 14-footer and Troy Hudson made a layup. Francis hit a 14-footer to spark a 14-2 run that Cato capped with a dunk, making it 31-19 with 1:30 left in the period.
