Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Even the Orlando Magic's usual tonic, a visit from the Detroit Pistons, could not help them tonight.

Grant Hill scored a season-high 42 points as the Pistons snapped a 13-game losing streak in Orlando and an overall seven-game skid against the Magic with a 118-106 victory.

Hill was 17-of-30 from the floor, 5-of-7 at the line, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out eight assists for Detroit, which has won four in a row and six of eight to move two games above the break-even mark for the first time this season.

"We all talked about the last game we played against them. They had us up by 20 points in the third quarter, so we just wanted to come out and match their aggressiveness and match their intensity, and we did," Hill said. "We did it all tonight, a lot of steals, rebounds, attacking the basket. It felt real good tonight and it was a great performance by our team. I just hope we can play like that all of the time."

Lindsey Hunter scored 10 of his season-high 25 points in the fourth quarter when the Pistons held off two runs by the Magic. Hunter made 7-of-12 shots, including 5-of-8 3-pointers, and had a career-best seven steals.

"We really moved the ball well. When you have guys like Grant and (Jerry) Stackhouse you have to double-team them, which leaves me open," Hunter said. "I just felt it tonight and hopefully I'll keep on feeling it for the rest of the season."

Stackhouse fell one shy of his 14th straight 20-point game for Detroit and Christian Laettner had a season-best 14 rebounds.

The Pistons had not won a game in this series since a 91-86 home triumph on January 28, 1998. They had not beaten the Magic on the road since January 2, 1993.

"This was a great win for us," said Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "We've struggled against this team for five years. To come down and win a big game for us was nice. Grant Hill was sensational. I thought Lindsey Hunter had his best game of the year."

Chris Gatling scored 26 points and rookie Corey Maggette added season highs of 20 points and eight rebounds for Orlando, which had rebounded from losses with a pair of victories over the Pistons earlier this season. But the Magic fell below .500 tonight with their season-high fifth straight loss.

Orlando shot 51 percent (40-of-79) but committed 27 turnovers that led to 37 points for Detroit. The Magic had only 21 assists.

"Again, a lot of carelessness," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers. "But that happens with any team. You dig down and you will find games where certain guys attempt to take over and try to do too much. I thought we did that tonight."

"We've been trying to force the action," Gentry said. "More press, a little bit to try and keep the tempo up and we ended up getting two or three steals which worked out great for us."

The Magic, who blew a 13-point fourth-quarter lead in Sunday's 111-103 overtime loss at Miami, trailed the Pistons 91-74 after three periods.

"I wish I could give you your money back," Rivers said. "That was bad. I don't know if we did not lose this game yesterday, to be honest. Really, we were outworked for the most part. The second half I think we showed a lot of character by getting back into it. We are not the kind of team that can come out at the beginning of the game and be slack or be outworked."

Rookie Chucky Atkins sank a 22-footer to cap a 10-0 burst and pull the Magic within 93-86 with 8:50 remaining. But Hill responded with a pair of free throws and Hunter followed with a jumper from the left corner before Jerome Williams dunked to push Detroit's advantage to 99-86 with 7:55 to play.

Orlando managed to trim the deficit to 105-98 when Bo Outlaw made a layup with 4:51 to go. Hunter responded with a 3-pointer from the right sideline with 4:23 left.
