Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Mitch Richmond scored 19 points against his former team and the Washington Wizards pulled away late and handed the Golden State Warriors their sixth straight loss, 99-87.

Richmond, who began his career with the Warriors, hit a 21-foot jumper from the right side to give the Wizards a 93-87 advantage with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. He made two free throws a minute later to help seal the victory.

"We knew we had it when we had a 10-point lead going into the fourth," Richmond said. "They were getting tired and we took advantage of that. You have to get the wins you are supposed to get."

Rod Strickland added 15 points and 10 assists for Washington, which shot 48 percent (40-of-84) from the field, including 5-of-11 from behind the arc. The Wizards have won five of eight games following a 1-7 stretch.

"Once we started controlling the boards, we started to control the game," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "That's what we did in the second half."

Golden State, which trailed 91-82 at the 5:39 mark, scored the next five points to make it close. Vonteego Cummings converted a three-point play and Antawn Jamison's dunk brought the Warriors within 91-87 with 2:50 left.

Golden State could not find the basket thereafter, falling to 0-3 since general manager Garry St. Jean replaced fired coach P.J. Carlesimo.

The Wizards, who had a 56-51 halftime lead, opened their largest advantage at 79-66 on a jumper by Richmond with 1:27 left in the third quarter. Washington took an 81-71 lead into the final period.

Juwan Howard and Tracy Murray added 13 points apiece for the Wizards, who outrebounded Golden State, 42-35, including a 27-14 advantage in the second half.

Jamison scored 21 points and John Starks added 16 for the Warriors, who shot 46 percent (35-of-77) but committed 20 turnovers.

"The turnovers were our Achilles heel tonight," St. Jean said. "Getting that many, you're not going to win. (The Wizards) were outstanding on the boards.

"I guess we got the Y2K bug in us," said Starks, who was 7-of-22 from the field. "Offensively, we are not playing good. We did some positive things but the (negative) things canceled those out."
