Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Even without their typical long-range shooting and best 3-point shooter for the final quarter, the Indiana Pacers extended their winning streak to six games with a 116-111 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Reggie Miller scored 24 points, making 10-of-14 shots before he was ejected for receiving two technical fouls with 4:12 left in the third quarter.

Miller appeared to be exchanging words with Nets point guard Stephon Marbury and received a technical after hitting a 17-footer to give the Pacers an 80-69 lead. When Miller was called for the first technical, he argued and received another.

Rik Smits had 22 points and nine rebounds and Jalen Rose added 19 points for Indiana, which has scored at least 100 points in each game on its streak and improved to 16-1 when doing so. Mark Jackson handed out a season-high 15 assists and Austin Croshere contributed 16 points off the bench.

"We did what we had to do to get this win," Jackson said. "This was a big game and we will go on the West Coast on a solid note. We played both ends of the floor and got the results. We won the games here at home that we should have and hopefully this will carry onto the road."

The Pacers took a season-low 10 shots from behind the arc and made five. Indiana outrebounded New Jersey, 41-30, and had a 22-12 advantage in second-chance points.

Kerry Kittles scored a season-high 33 points and Marbury added 26 and 10 assists for New Jersey, which had its season-high four-game winning streak stopped. The Nets have lost six of their last seven on the road.

"We were mauled on the inside," said New Jersey coach Don Casey. "Rik, Croshere and (Dale) Davis were just too strong for us. We are now back to struggling on the road."

"We never established our inside game and guys got stagnant out on the perimeter," Marbury said. "We ended up relying on Kerry to carry us. To win games on the road, me, Kerry and Keith (Van Horn) have to step up and play as a unit and we didn't do that tonight."

Johnny Newman scored 16 points, hitting 7-of-8 shots for the Nets. Van Horn added 11, but committed seven of New Jersey's 16 turnovers and had only one rebound.

Rose sank a pair of free throws to cap a 10-0 burst and give the Pacers their biggest lead, 106-88, with 6:02 remaining. Kittles and Rose then exchanged baskets and the Nets followed with an 18-4 run that trimmed the deficit to 112-107 with 46 seconds left. Rose answered with one free throw 10 seconds later and the Nets came no closer.

Croshere, Al Harrington, Rose and Jeff Foster each made 1-of-2 free throws in the last 33 seconds for Indiana, which committed the majority of its 11 fourth-period turnovers during New Jersey's run.

"We had to work hard," Croshere said. "Our team played out os position tonight and we really had to work hard on Keith Van Horn. They are a young athletic team and we had to get up on them early, but they did not go away."

"We had 11 turnovers in the fourth quarter and ended up with 21," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "That's what kept them in it. Thank goodness we had a cushion. In the fourth, they forced us into turnovers and they hit shots. But I thought we played a pretty decent game."

Smits scored 16 points and Miller added 15 as the Pacers shot 59 percent (26-of-44) in the first half and held a 63-45 lead. Jackson had 10 assists in the first two quarters.

Indiana maintained its hot shooting the third period, hitting 14-of-22 shots and taking a 94-77 advantage into the final 12 minutes.
