Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- It doesn't matter who is the home team. The Staples Center is the Los Angeles Lakers' court.

In the first half of a home-and-away series at the arena shared by both Los Angeles teams, Shaquille O'Neal had 38 points and 15 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 29 and nine as the Lakers extended their season-high winning streak to 11 games with a 122-98 victory over the Clippers.

Glen Rice contributed 19 points for the Lakers, who improved to 16-2 at the Staples Center and won for the 18th time in 19 games overall. They are on their longest winning streak since beginning the 1997-98 season with 11 consecutive wins.

"It's a terriffic advantage," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "It helps us and I like it. Probably the biggest difference is looking at the scorer's table from this end of the court. They (the Clippers) played well in the first half but I would have been surprised to see us down at the end of the game."

Tyrone Nesby and rookie Lamar Odom each scored 22 points for the Clippers, whose third straight loss dropped their home record to 6-9. They set a franchise record for attendance with 20,042 fans. The largest crowd ever to watch an NBA game in Southern California earned praise from Bryant.

"It is an advantage playing a couple of extra games here," he said. "The crowd was a little young, younger than our fans. They really seemed to enjoy the game and had a lot of enthusiasm. Our fans are a little older, a little bit more laid back."

The Lakers, who have won 11 in a row against the Clippers, will be the home team for Wednesday's game. They yielded a season-high 61 points in the first half before holding the Clippers to just 37 after halftime.

"Well, we started slow but we picked it up in the second half," said O'Neal, who is averaging 33.2 points and 15.8 rebounds over his last five games. "In the second half we played solid defense, ran the floor, and did what we were supposed to do."

The Clippers took their largest lead in the second quarter as Derek Anderson's driving layup put them on top, 31-24, with 11:10 left. They owned a two-point advantage entering the second half but the Lakers tied the game, 61-61, 18 seconds into the third quarter on a hook shot by O'Neal.

The Lakers took a four-point lead before Nesby tied the game for the final time, 67-67, with a driving layup with 8:46 left in the quarter. But the Lakers outscored the Clippers, 29-12, as Bryant took over, scoring 10 points. O'Neal allowed the Lakers to go into the fourth period with a 17-point lead with a basket at the end of the quarter.

"I don't understand it but I just don't think we took this game seriously early," Bryant said. "Coach Jackson at halftime played a tape for a few minutes and said we had to pick up our defense and play like we were supposed to. We did."

The Clippers were never in it in the final period, getting no closer than 14 points.

While O'Neal, Bryant and Rice collected 86 points, Brian Shaw was the leader off the bench with nine and Rick Fox chipped in seven and seven assists.

Maurice Taylor tallied 16 points and Michael Olowokandi grabbed 10 rebounds but scored just one point for the Clippers, who were outscored in the paint, 76-52.

"Shaq was the difference," Taylor said. "That was obvious. If Shaq doesn't have the game he has, it's a totally different game."
