Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- As long as Glenn Robinson wasn't on the free-throw line, he couldn't miss.

Robinson tied a season-high with 36 points on 17-of-23 shooting to rally the Milwaukee Bucks to a 116-113 victory over the floundering Atlanta Hawks.

"I had it going tonight," Robinson said. "I really felt good so I kept taking the shots. Now that they're going in I hope I keep making big shots and keep the hot hand."

"Glenn was unbelievable," Bucks coach George Karl said. "He's the reason we won tonight. He may be the best 17-, 18-foot jump shooter in basketball, maybe the best one I've ever seen."

Robinson made two huge jumpers down the stretch that turned a three-point deficit into a 114-113 lead with 37 seconds left. After two free throws by Tim Thomas gave Milwaukee a 116-113 lead and Atlanta's Jimmy Jackson missed a 3-pointer, Robinson had a chance to seal the win as he went to the line with 16 seconds to go. But Robinson, an 80 percent foul shooter, missed both to give Atlanta another chance.

"I'm not sure what happened," Robinson said. "The first one I knew was short right away. The second one I thought was good but it just popped out."

"When a player makes his shots like that it surprises me that he missed those two free throws," Jackson said.

Jackson missed another 3-pointer and after a jump ball, Isaiah Rider also missed from long range. The horn sounded during a scramble for the rebound.

Ray Allen scored 25 points and Sam Cassell handed out 18 assists -- one shy of his career high -- for the Bucks, who bounced back from Monday's overtime loss in Philadelphia and improved to 2-0 against Atlanta this season.

"As a team, we really needed this win, especially after last night in Philly," Robinson said. "We were tired, so this was a nice win."

Jackson scored 30 points and Rider returned from a team-imposed one-game suspension to add 17 for the Hawks, who have lost eight of their last nine games. Atlanta was without flu-ridden coach Lenny Wilkens and also was without a basket for the final 2:28.

"We played good defense on (Robinson)," Jackson said. "I always got a hand in his face."

"Glenn Robinson put on one of the all-time shooting exhibitions tonight," Hawks assistant Stan Albeck said.

The Hawks held a 106-99 lead after a 3-pointer by Jackson with 5:28 remaining. Robinson and Allen combined for the next seven points to tie it and the teams traded hoops until a free throw by Rider and two by Jackson gave Atlanta a 113-110 lead with 1:29 to go.

Robinson made a turnaround 15-footer from the post and a 21-foot jumper around a miss by Jackson, giving Milwaukee the lead with 37 seconds left. Atlanta's Dikembe Mutombo was whistled for an offensive foul and Thomas made a pair of foul shots with 24 seconds remaining.

Thomas scored 13 points and Dale Ellis added 11 for the Bucks, who shot 56 percent (49-of-88) and made their first 13 free throws until Robinson's misses. Milwaukee committed just 10 turnovers.

Bimbo Coles scored 25 points and Alan Henderson added 17 for the Hawks, who shot 57 percent (46-of-81) and made 15-of-18 foul shots but committed 15 turnovers.

Atlanta scored 15 of the first 17 points and led 32-22 after one period as Coles and Henderson scored eight points apiece. Milwaukee pulled within one point in the second quarter, when Ellis and Vinny Del Negro had six points each, before settling for a 59-51 halftime deficit.

Cassell's two free throws with 12 seconds left in the third period capped a 12-4 run and gave the Bucks an 88-85 advantage.
