Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers gave new meaning to the phrase "back end of a home-and-home series."

Shquille O'Neal had another monster game with 40 points and 19 rebounds as the Lakers extended their winning streak to a season-high 12 games by completing a "home-and-home" sweep of the Clippers with a 118-101 victory.

The Lakers and Clippers share the new Staples Center and were meeting for the third time this season and second time in as many nights. But as was the case the previous two times, the Lakers had little trouble and have won the three contests between Los Angeles rivals by a combined 68 points.

"I'm glad that's over with. Good games for us to win, not a whole lot of fun to play, watch or coach," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Kobe Bryant added 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers (27-5), who own the league's best record and are riding their longest winning streak since the 1990-91 campaign, when they established the second-longest winning streak in franchise history by winning 16 in a row.

O'Neal, who is second in the league in scoring and first in rebounding, surpassed 40 points for the second time this season. He scored 41 against Chicago on November 19.

"This is the first season I've been knick-knack injury free," O'Neal said. "I'm just trying to be productive and do what I am told to, go out and rebound, score when I have to and play good `D'."

"We don't have an answer for him defensively," said Clippers coach Chris Ford. "We just try to stay on some other guys and make him beat us. Shaq is a tremendous player and I have a lot of respect for him."

Rookie Lamar Odom had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead a balanced attack for the Clippers. Tyrone Nesby added 23 points and Maurice Taylor 22 as the Clippers suffered their fourth straight loss following a three-game winning streak.

"We were in the flow offensively, we just couldn't stop them," Odom said. "We got a little fatigued at the end."

The Clippers were totally overmatched in the first two meetings against the Lakers this season and were actually in tonight's contest and pulled even, 73-73, with 2:56 left in the third quarter after Odom hit a hook shot.

However, O'Neal had a pair of baskets around one by Glen Rice for a six-point cushion entering the fourth quarter.

Following a dunk by Nesby to start the final period, O'Neal scored five straight points before Michael Olowokandi hit two free throws for the Clippers.

Rick Fox ansewered with a 3-pointer, giving the Lakers an 87-77 advantage with 9:47 to play. The Lakers maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 19 points in the final minutes.

"We stopped making some shots," Ford said. "We took it at the end of that third period, we had some good shots, just didn't convert them and they came down and made some baskets on our guys."

Led by O'Neal and Bryant, the Lakers managed a commanding 60-42 rebounding advantage, including a 20-9 edge on the offensive boards.

O'Neal needed just one half to record his latest double-double, collecting 20 points and 10 rebounds before intermission. But paced by Hudson's 13 points, the Clippers were able to forge a 52-52 tie at the break.

The Lakers shot 50 percent (50-of-100) while holding the Clippers to 45 percent (39-of-86).
