Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls welcomed Toni Kukoc back to their lineup, and the versatile forward delivered.

Kukoc, who missed 24 games with a back injury, scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulls ended an 11-game losing streak with a 77-66 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Nothing comes easy for Chicago, which nearly blew a 14-point lead entering the fourth quarter before recovering. The victory ended the second-longest losing streak in franchise history. Chicago dropped 13 straight from October 29-December 4, 1976.

"I felt pretty good in the first half, then in the second half I ran out of gas," Kukoc said. "I went into the game confident and in the first 12 minutes I had the energy. I really have to work the next week or two to get myself back into basketball shape."

"Toni did a good job of settling us down," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "He gave us instant offense and understands what we are trying to do."

Washington scored the first 11 points of the final period to cut the deficit to 66-63 with 8:16 remaining. Tracy Murray scored five points during the run, which was capped by two free throws by Chris Whitney.

The Wizards went ice cold thereafter, going without a basket until Juwan Howard connected on a short jumper from the left baseline at the 1:41 mark.

Chicago did not exactly sizzle, going four minutes without a basket until rookie Elton Brand connected on a layup to give the Bulls a 69-63 edge with 4:10 left. A short jumper and two free throws by the top overall pick sealed the victory.

"We should be embarrassed by the way we played, Washington coach Gar Heard said. "We were beaten in every phase of the game, even on the boards, where we're usually strong. We made bad decisions every time we got within striking distance."

Chicago jumped out to a 29-18 first quarter lead, paced by 11 points by Kukoc. The Bulls extended the lead to 50-36 at halftime and took a 66-52 lead into the final quarter.

Brand finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds for Chicago, which improved to 3-11 at home and won despite scoring a season-low 27 points in the second half.

Ron Artest, the Bulls' other first-round selection in the 1999 draft, finished with 16 points. Chicago shot 36 percent from the field (27-of-75) and set a season high for rebounds, holding a 56-46 edge on the boards.

"Toni gave us a lot of confidence," Artest said. "He plays team ball and is very vocal out there. He bring a lot to the offense."

Murray scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Wizards, who were held to a season-low point total.

Juwan Howard added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Washington, which shot a dismal 29 percent (24-of-84) from the floor.

"We just played real bad," said Washington guard Rod Strickland, who missed all nine of his shots and finished with only three points and six assists. "We shot poorly and just didn't establish anything. This is a bad loss."
