Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Chris Gatling scored 23 points off the bench and the Orlando Magic used a big second quarter to defeat the Vancouver Grizzlies, 116-96, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Gatling, who hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor and 9-of-10 free throws, scored 10 points during the second-quarter run that broke open the game.

"We needed this game," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I like streaks, but I like positive streaks and that wasn't what we were on. I thought we connected as a group over the last 24 hours. When you win a game, everybody's happy."

"We had some meetings and a more relaxed practice and I think it really helped us to relax as a team and come together," Magic center John Amaechi said.

Vancouver had a 29-27 lead after the opening period, but Gatling had four points to start the 14-1 burst. Chucky Atkins' jumper capped it and gave the Hornets a 41-30 lead with 7:37 left.

After Michael Dickerson drove for a dunk to cut the deficit to 43-34, Gatling scored six more points during a 10-2 run, extending the lead to 53-36 with 4:22 remaining. The Grizzlies closed the second quarter with a 9-2 spurt but trailed at halftime, 55-45.

Vancouver cut the deficit to 55-47 on a hook shot by Shareef Abdur-Rahim to open the third quarter, but the Magic responded with a 9-2 run to build a 64-49 cushion with 10:07 left. The Grizzlies did not challenge thereafter.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored 17 points and Amaechi added 16 for Orlando.

"We were a little slow tonight. They literally ran us out of the gym," Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins said. "They had 35 fast-break points and shot 54 percent from the field, and a lot of them were layups."

Magic guard Darrell Armstrong, who scored 15 points in the victory, felt the win was important for the teams' psyche.

"It helps heal the body heal faster and the mind feels much better," said Armstrong. "You wake in the morning and it feels good instead of getting up and saying 'Gee, we lost another one'".

Abdur-Rahim scored 17 points to lead Vancouver, which was unable to follow up on its most impressive victory of the season last night in Miami. The star forward had an off night, hitting only 3-of-13 shots. He was 11-of-12 from the foul line.

"(Orlando) really pushed the ball tonight," Abdur-Rahim said. "We turned the ball over way too much and that really hurt us. I missed a lot of easy shots that I usually make, but the turnovers killed us."

Dickerson added 16 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 42 percent (33-of-79) and yielded 23 points off turnovers.
