Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning recognized the problem and did something about it.

Two days after fouling out and scoring a season-low 12 points in an embarrassing home loss, Mourning had 28 points on 12-of-15 shooting and nine blocked shots to lead the Miami Heat to a 111-99 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Following Tuesday's loss to Vancouver, Mourning shouldered the blame, saying he made "stupid mistakes" and needed to make "better decisions." Tonight, he played a pivotal role in a 15-3 third-quarter run that sealed the victory.

"Our game plan was to go straight to the basket and make plays," Mourning said. "When you take the ball aggressively to the basket it forces defenses to help. If they don't help, you get high percentage shots."

"Alonzo is a workaholic," Rockets center Thomas Hamilton said. "He works hard every day and it comes out in his intensity. I bet their coach got on him after the other night so we knew Alonzo would come out fired up."

Jamal Mashburn added 19 points and four steals for the Heat, who have won the last eight meetings with Houston. The Rockets have not beaten Miami since sweeping the season series in 1994-95 en route to their second straight NBA title.

"We were trying to do some things to keep the ball away from Mourning on his side of the court," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "But he still found a way. He just overpowered us. ... He had a phenomenal game."

"Alonzo was blocking shots with help defense," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We need to get the softness out of our game. ... We need to put a string of wins together."

Rookie Steve Francis led Houston with 22 points and Walt Williams added 17 off the bench.

The Heat snapped a 2-2 tie with eight straight points and led 30-24 after 12 minutes. A 3-pointer by Cuttino Mobley got Houston within 40-38 midway through the second quarter before Miami closed the half with a 14-5 burst. P.J. Brown's follow shot capped the run with 3.5 seconds to go.

The Heat led 62-51 with 9:21 left in the third quarter when Mashburn sank an 18-footer to ignite a 15-3 burst. Brown followed Mashburn's basket with an eight-footer from the left corner but Francis made a free throw for Houston.

Mourning sank a pair from the line with 7:16 to go and Mashburn buried an 18-footer 38 seconds later. Mourning pushed the lead to 72-52 with a dunk off a feed from Mashburn, but Mobley hit a technical free throw.

Mourning sank a 16-footer for a 74-53 lead but Mobley hit another technical off an illegal defense violation. Brown ended the run with a three-point play with 4:45 remaining and the Heat were never threatened thereafter.

The lead had an 89-62 lead with 49 seconds left in the third quarter and Houston never got within single digits in the final period.

The Heat shot 54 percent (46-of-86) from the field and held a 41-35 edge on the boards.

The Rockets have lost 10 of 13 since a season-high three-game winning streak.
