Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The worst road team in the Western Conference won a game in one of the more unlikely places.

Michael Dickerson scored 28 points as the Vancouver Grizzlies snapped the New Jersey Nets' franchise-record nine-game home winning streak with a 101-91 victory.

Dickerson came within one point of matching his season high and added seven rebounds for Vancouver, which defeated the Nets for the first time after losing the first six meetings between the teams.

The Grizzlies improved to 3-13 on the road and 2-1 on its five-game road trip.

"My teammates got me the ball at all the right times," Dickerson said. "Our shots were there all night. Our defense was key. These road wins are giving us more confidence."

"It was a hard-fought game for us tonight," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "Our big guys did a hell of a job filling the paint and what can you say about the two Mikes? They just played exceptional. Our ball movement was outstanding and our defense was great tonight."

New Jersey trailed most of the game but moved within 78-74 on a driving layup by Keith Van Horn with 11:09 remaining. But a dunk by Dickerson and a layup from rookie Milt Palacio gave the Grizzlies an 82-74 cushion with 8:36 left.

The Nets closed to 82-77 on free throws by Stephon Marbury and Kerry Kitles but consecutive 3-pointers by Mike Bibby gave Vancouver a commanding 88-77 lead at the 4:29 mark and New Jersey was done.

Bibby had a stellar game with 20 points, nine assists and a career-high nine rebounds. Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 19 points for Vancouver, which shot 45 percent (35-of-78) from the floor and made all 21 of its free throws.

"Tonight we showed a lot more maturity," Abdur-Rahim said. "You saw different guys step up and play unselfishly. Bibby did a hell of a job, almost getting a triple-double against a great player like (Stephon) Marbury."

Kittles scored 21 points for the Nets, who shot 43 percent (34-of-80) and attempted only one free throw in the first three quarters.

Keith Van Horn added 19 points and Marbury had 19 and 11 assists. The Nets' playmaker sat out much of the fourth quarter after receiving his fifth foul with 7:35 left.

"We didn't play well tonight," Marbury said. "We came out with no energy and those guys came out with a lot of energy. (Vancouver) played well tonight."

"I don't know what to say right now," disappointed Nets forward Kendall Gill said. "We missed a lot of open jump shots. They do have some talent, but we didn't play well at all."

Dickerson scored nine points in the first quarter to stake the Grizzlies to a 28-27 lead. Kittles kept New Jersey close, scoring 12 points in the period. Vancouver took a 53-45 lead into halftime as Dickerson added nine more points and held a 78-70 advantage entering the final quarter.
