Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 32 points and fueled a decisive run to close the first half as the first-place Utah Jazz coasted to their sixth straight win and continued their dominance of the Houston Rockets with a 103-87 rout.

Malone was 12-of-21 from the floor and 8-of-12 at the line for Utah, which remained one game ahead of second-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division and posted its 11th consecutive win against Houston.

The 6-9 power forward and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player made sure the Rockets would not pull out their first win in the series since November 1996, scoring eight points during a 13-2 run that gave Utah a 57-42 halftime cushion.

Carlos Rogers scored a season-high 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting after learning earlier in the day that his brother had died from an aneurysm. But Rogers received very little offensive support from his teammates as the Rockets dropped their third straight game.

Rookie sensation Steve Francis managed just five points for Houston, which has lost five of six and 11 of 13 since a modest three-game win streak.

"Carlos was unbelievable tonight," Francis said. "I commend him for being so focused. I have so much respect for him right now. He respects the game enough to come out there and play, which says a lot. You have to be humble and let him know that we are going to be there for him."

"You really have to put things into perspective," Malone said of the tragedy that had befallen Rogers. "It's one of those times where the game is secondary, when something like this happens. You have to still come out and play because anyone can beat you. You have to play these games to the end because nothing is a given in this league."

Bryon Russell had season highs with 25 points and 10 rebounds and John Stockton added 10, six and six assists for Utah, which shot 44 percent (37-of-85) and held a 45-42 advantage on the boards. The Jazz committed just nine turnovers.

"I could not have done it without my team," Russell said. "I'm just working hard and trying to be all I can be. I had a lot of good open looks at the basket and recently I've been working on my whole game."

"Russell had a terrific game," Utah coach Jerry Sloan added. "He's been like that for us over the years."

Mobley scored 15 points for Houston, which shot 40 percent (27-of-68) and yielded 22 points off turnovers.

A layup by Mobley with 3:25 remaining in the second quarter pulled the Rockets within 44-40. But Stockton and Malone buried jumpers before Adam Keefe's free throw and ensuing dunk made it 51-40 with 1:21 remaining in the half.

Mobley responded with a driving layup but Malone made four free throws and a follow shot to give Utah a 57-42 bulge at intermission.

"We closed the second (quarter) out on a bad note," Tomjanovich added. "We were doing a real good job and then we lost our focus. It was a step backwards tonight."

Russell scored 10 points to stake the Jazz to a 27-22 lead in the opening quarter. Despite playing with a heavy heart, Rogers came out blazing as well, scoring 13 first-quarter points before settling for 15 at the half.

"I thought Rogers came out and played an excellent game considering the circumstances," Sloan said. "You hate to see that happen but he's a talented guy and showed that life still goes on."

Despite exploding for 11 more in the third quarter, Rogers could not help the Rockets close on the Jazz as Utah extended its lead to 82-66 entering the final period.
