Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Not even Alonzo Mourning can make a shot from the seat of his pants.

Mourning stumbled to the floor after catching a pass and had his desperation shot smothered as the Miami Heat suffered a 90-89 loss to the New Jersey Nets.

New Jersey's Scott Burrell was fouled by Mourning attempting a 3-pointer and made just 1-of-3 from the line with 5.1 seconds left, giving the Nets a 90-89 lead.

"They were absolutely locked up," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Burrell picked his dribble up and had nowhere to go with it. Zo left his feet and they were locked up."

Burrell, an 84 percent foul shooter, was at a loss to explain the misses.

"I wasn't nervous," he said. "I missed my first. I knew I was off my shot but my second was good and my third was on line (but missed). I just had too much adrenaline going."

"He got the one and that was all that we needed," Nets coach Don Casey said. "But we would have wanted all three."

Miami, which erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, called timeout and worked the ball underneath to Mourning, who was defended by Michael Cage and lost his balance as he caught the pass. No foul was called as Mourning fell on his backside and with time running out, tried a wild shot that was swatted away by Cage.

"The last play was right there for us," Riley said. "Zo was wide open. He did get grabbed and was pushed to the ground. You can't cry about it but it was a definite foul."

"The feeling was they were going to go to Zo," Casey said. "They executed an excellent diagrammed play. Unfortuantely for them, Cage made him reach for the pass and he fell down, and that was it for them."

Mourning, who had 23 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks, argued that he initially was fouled, then tried to call timeout. But the officials disagreed and the Nets escaped with their first win in Miami since April 18, 1997.

"I lost my balance," Mourning said. "You've got to deal with it. With 82 games, you're going to be confronted with unfortunate situations like this. It shouldn't have gotten to that point."

Stephon Marbury had 20 points and 11 assists and Kendall Gill and Kerry Kittles scored 16 points apiece for New Jersey, which snapped a two-game skid and won for only the third time in 14 road games.

Dan Majerle scored a season-high 20 points and rookie Anthony Carter added 18 for Miami, which fell to 2-2 at the new American Airlines Arena after going 10-3 at Miami Arena.

"We've been fighting like this for the past couple of weeks," Riley said. "We've won close games and we've lost close games. We had to make a desperate push at the end."

The Nets held a 76-65 lead early in the fourth quarter but the Heat took advantage with Marbury resting and went on a 13-2 burst. Carter scored six points, including the basket that tied it at 78-78 with 5:19 to go.

Miami's Jamal Mashburn answered a floater by Marbury with a layup for an 87-87 tie with 1:27 left. After two free throws by Van Horn, Mashburn made a jumper to tie it again with a minute to go. But Van Horn and Mashburn traded misses to set up the frantic finish.

Johnny Newman scored 11 points and Van Horn added 10 for the Nets, who shot 43 percent (32-of-74) from the field, including 10-of-21 from 3-point range. Kittles made four 3-pointers and Newman three.

Mashburn scored 16 points for the Heat, who shot 48 percent (38-of-79) and held a 46-32 rebounding advantage but made only 7-of-14 free throws.

The Nets trailed 44-43 at halftime as Mourning scored 17 points. But Gill scored nine points and Kittles six in the third quarter as New Jersey took a 74-65 lead into the final period.
