Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Bob Sura scored 25 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers used a furious fourth-quarter rally to defeat the New York Knicks, 89-86.

New York took an 82-75 lead on a dunk by Marcus Camby with 5:20 remaining. But Sura answered with a 22-foot jumper and a 3-pointer from the right sideline to cut the deficit to 82-80 with 4:23 left.

After Camby hit a free throw to give New York an 83-80 lead, Brevin Knight connected from the right side and Shawn Kemp put the Cavaliers ahead, 84-83, with a short jumper from the left corner with 1:30 to go.

The teams traded empty possessions before Sura sealed New York's fate with another 3-pointer, giving Cleveland an 87-83 cushion with 10 seconds remaining.

"I was spotting up, what else would I be doing?" Sura said. "I was praying for Mark Bryant to throw me that ball and he did. It was a long 3, but the clock was running down. I knew it was going in when I let it go, so I felt pretty good about that."

New York fought back to 87-86 on a long 3-pointer by Chris Childs but Knight hit two free throws and Allan Houston's potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short.

"Right from the beginning, that was the best we've played in terms of everything, Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said. "Our defense early on really established us. We made big stops down the stretch and Bobby fought Allan Houston about as well as you could."

Cleveland, which snapped a season-high seven-game road losing streak, improved to 3-11 on the road and won for only the third time in its last 13 contests.

We've lost a ton of close games," Wittman said. "I told our guys at that last time out, `Let's remember how we felt during those losses and le'ts make sure we don't feel that way tonight.' We had to make plays, not hope they happened but make sure they happened."

Patrick Ewing was ineffective throughout the contest, scoring only eight points and committing eight turnovers. The Knicks center did not play during the fourth quarter.

"I felt real sluggish," Ewing said. "I think it was more because of the flu. I wasn't playing particularly well and we decided to go to other people."

"Every game I try to play the guys I feel give us the best chance to win," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. Every time you lose, you make the wrong choice. You try to find the right thing ... I didn't tonight. I am disappointed in myself about that."

Cleveland jumped out to a 41-24 lead on a layup by Andre Miller with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter. But the Knicks stormed back, led by six points by John Wallace and four by Camby, to cut the deficit to 44-40 at halftime.

The Cavaliers used a 6-0 third-quarter spurt to take a 65-53 advantage at the 3:52 mark. New York fought back with a 10-0 run sparked by six points by Houston and four by Charlie Ward to close to within 65-63 with 1:31 left in the period.

The Knicks scored the first six points of the final quarter to take a 71-67 lead at 10:18 remaining and built the lead to seven points before Cleveland fought back for the victory.

Lamond Murray scored 15 points for the Cavaliers, who shot 41 percent (30-of-73) from the field but scored 30 points off 20 New York turnovers.

Houston led the Knicks with 23 points, but just three in the fourth quarter. Camby added 13 for New York, which shot 45 percent (34-of-75) and had its three-game winning streak snapped.

"This game was frustrating because you would think that we would have learned by now in situations like this, and your competitive spirit would come out," Houston said. "You would think that we wouldn't want to revisit these type of games."
