Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Aaron Williams scored a season-high 17 points off the bench to lead seven players in double figures as the Washington Wizards snapped a three-game losing streak with a 117-89 rout of the Toronto Raptors.

Rod Strickland had 15 points, Jahidi White 13, Ike Austin 12 and Tracy Murray, Juwan Howard and Michael Smith 10 apiece in a balanced attack that saw 12 players log at least five minutes and none more than 30.

The Wizards, who had lost six of their previous eight since a season-high three-game winning streak, improved to 7-10 at home this season.

Vince Carter scored 19 points for Toronto, which has dropped three in a row and fell to 8-8 on the road. Antonio Davis added 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Raptors, who shot 39 percent (32-of-83) from the field.

The Wizards' enjoyed their largest lead of the season (32) and largest margin of victory. Their largest lead in a game this season was 19 points against the Houston Rockets on December 26. Their previous largest margin of victory was 14 points in a 108-104 victory over New Jersey on December 16.

"Obviously, we played well the last two games," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "Our game plan going in was to make them shoot a lot of jump shots and keep them out of the highlight films."

"We came out and played great defense and it motivated us to play offense and before we knew it, we had a great lead," White said.

The Raptors missed 16 of their first 18 shots to begin the game and trailed 12-4 just over eight minutes into the first quarter.

Washington extended its lead to 35-18 on a short running jumper by Chris Whitney with 6:48 remaining in the second quarter. Thirty seconds later, Carter was floored near midcourt by an inadvertant elbow to the jaw from Murray. Carter stayed down on the court for about a minute, then headed to the locker room. He returned and checked back into the game with 5:03 left in the half.

The Wizards guard sought Carter out in Toronto's locker room after the game and apologized.

"I was about to choke on my own gum," Carter said of the shot. "I had a bunch of blood in my mouth and I didn't want to spit it out on the floor.

"It seems like everybody got a little frustrated out there. It was one of those nights when it's not going to go in, but you can't not shoot. When the offense is falling, that's when you need defense the most, and we didn't step it up. It's one thing to say it in here, but we have to do it out there on the court."

Tracy McGrady added 16 points in 32 minutes off the bench.
