Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Gary Payton had 35 points and 10 rebounds and Emanual Davis scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, when the Seattle SuperSonics pulled away for a 103-93 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Payton hit 12-of-20 shots from the floor and all eight of his free throws as the SuperSonics won their third straight game. He also limited Nuggets guard Nick Van Exel to 2-of-11 shooting.

"We knew Denver had beat a lot of great teams and we needed to play like this," Payton said. "This is the best game we've played in a couple of months. Denver has a lot of players capable of winning games by themselves."

Davis played just six minutes before the final period when he made all four of his shots. Denver closed to 91-83 on a jumper by Ron Mercer with 4:03 remaining, but Davis answered with a 3-pointer from the right corner 22 seconds later.

Seattle shot 50 percent (35-of-70), including 11-of-20 from behind the arc, and defeated Denver for the third straight meeting. The SuperSonics also made 22-of-23 free throws.

Antonio McDyess scored 22 points and Mercer added 21 for Denver, which shot just 29 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range and lost for the fifth time in seven games.

"We're just not as good a team as them right now," said Denver coach Dan Issel. "They know how to win and they tightened the screws defensively in the fourth quarter and got the job done."

George McCloud contributed 19 points and seven assists off the bench for the Nuggets, whose last lead was 85-84 when Keon Clark made a follow shot with 8:42 to go.

"We had our chances," McCloud said. "They stepped up and pressured us with their defense. We didn't convert down the stretch. They moved the ball well."

Davis had a layup to put Seattle on top for good, 86-85, with 8:27 remaining.

The Nuggets closed the deficit to 96-93 with 2:19 left on a layup by McDyess, but Brent Barry answered with a 3-pointer 23 seconds later. Vin Baker and Gary Payton each made a pair of free throws to close it out.

"The key to the victory was the free throw shooting," Barry said. "Gary Payton has a nice game every night. Not only does he do what you expect, but he does things you don't expect to help win the game."

Mercer scored 18 points in the first half to help the Nuggets to a 55-50 lead.

The third period featured seven ties before Payton's layup gave Seattle a 78-76 edge with 25 seconds left.
