Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kerry Kittles scored 22 points and Stephon Marbury added 21 and 10 assists to lift the New Jersey Nets to a 110-105 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kittles made 9-of-16 shots from the floor as New Jersey won for the 13th time in 18 games following a dismal 2-15 start. Marbury made 7-of-17 shots, including a key basket that ended the Clippers' final surge.

Los Angeles closed to 106-103 when Derek Anderson hit a layup with 1:17 remaining. Michael Olowokandi swatted a runner by Marbury out of bounds with just four seconds left on the shot clock. But Marbury took the inbounds pass and sank a 22-footer from the right wing with 18 seconds left.

"I'm just playing. I love winning," Marbury said. "It's a lot of our guys coming to play every night and doing it offensively and defensively. We fought back and won the game. They made a run and we had to stand there and fight."

Keith Van Horn had 19 points and nine rebounds and Kendall Gill added 18 and a season-high seven assists for New Jersey, which has won 10 of its last 11 home games with the only defeat being a 101-91 loss to Vancouver on January 7.

"We wanted to come out and win even though it was ugly," Gill said. "Steph hit some big shots down the stretch. We're learning how to put teams away now. This was like another Vancouver game and we knew we came in and underestimated Vancouver and they beat us."

Jamie Feick contributed nine points and 14 rebounds off the bench, leading the Nets to a 48-29 advantage on the boards.

Rookie Lamar Odom scored 26 points for the second straight game and Anderson added 23 for Los Angeles, which has lost six in a row and 12 of its last 13 on the road. Odom made 11-of-13 shots.

"Lamar Odom is the Rookie of the Year by far, it's not even close," Marbury said. "He plays with a lot of poise."

Maurice Taylor scored 18 points and Michael Olowokandi added 16 and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 54 percent (44-of-82).

"The guys continue to play hard even though we're not winning," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "I can't fault the effort tonight. Our defense overall was not that bad. We shot the ball well, but the total package wasn't good enough tonight."

Marbury scored 14 points in the first half, helping the Nets to a 56-50 lead. Kittles scored six points as New Jersey opened the third period with a 9-3 burst. He also hit a 3-pointer to give the Nets their biggest lead, 70-55, with 8:04 left in the period.

The Clippers closed the deficit to 85-78 entering the fourth quarter. But New Jersey pushed it back to 96-83 when Johnny Newman made a layup with 6:42 left.

Anderson converted a three-point play to cap a 9-2 spurt and pull the Clippers within 100-95 with 2:55 left. Anderson had a layup to cut the deficit to 104-101 with 1:17 to go but Marbury answered with a 19-footer 18 seconds later.

"We need to play a full game and not throw in the towel at the end. That means we have to get tougher," Anderson said. "I think we can score against anybody, it's just that we need to finish them off and win."
