Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 32 points and red-hot Grant Hill scored four of his 30 in the final two minutes as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Washington Wizards, 105-98, for their eighth win in nine games.

Juwan Howard's 17-footer cut Detroit's lead to 95-94 with 1:52 left. But Lindsey Hunter completed his 19-point game with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to four with 1:38 to play.

Isaac Austin responded with a basket as Washington moved within 98-96 with 1:24 to go. Hill, who has scored 214 points in his last six games, sank two free throws with 1:16 remaining to give Detroit a 100-96 advantage.

After a turnover by Washington's Tracy Murray, Hill made a 12-footer from the left corner for a 102-96 cushion with 54 seconds left. Mitch Richmond's 15-footer with 27 seconds to play cut Detroit's lead to 102-98 but the Wizards never got any closer.

"Once again tonight, we made some big shots," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "Lindsey made a real big 3, then we went to Grant and he came through for us. For us to be effective, we have to get to the 100s. We tried to speed up the game by pressing and being a little more aggressive defensively."

Stackhouse added a career-high seven of Detroit's season-high 17 steals as the Pistons scored 34 points off Washington's 27 turnovers.

"I don't usually get that many steals because I don't like to gamble on defense," Stackhouse said. "So they don't really come my way. I didn't gamble that much tonight, either. I just played good positional defense, was able to read their passes and step in front of them."

At 20-15, the Pistons moved five games over .500 for the first time this season.

Richmond scored 29 points on 13-of-22 shooting and Howard added 20 for the struggling Wizards, who have lost five of six overall and six straight road games.

"The turnovers were too great," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "We had an opportunity to win, but when you make 27 or 30 turnovers against a good team, you're not going to win. We turned it over too many times and at crucial times."

The Pistons entered the fourth quarter with an 81-71 cushion but a dunk by Howard cut Detroit's lead to 93-90 with 4:02 to play. Hill answered with his own dunk with 3:30 left, but Strickland and Howard scored consecutive baskets.

The Wizards shot 54 percent (41-of-76) from the field and outrebounded Detroit, 42-34, but it was their inability to hold on to the ball which cost them the game.

"I knew we had a lot (turnovers) but I didn't know we had 30," Richmond said. "That means we gave them 30 extra opportunities to score and we lost by seven."

Washington opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to turn a four-point halftime deficit into a three-point lead. Strickland started the run with a 15-foot running jumper and Richmond's basket with 9:23 remaining gave the Wizards a 56-53 advantage.

"When we took the lead at 56-53, we had three or four turnovers and didn't capitalize on the great defense we were playing," Richmond said.

Detroit answered with its own 11-0 run as Washington committed six of its nine third-quarter turnovers. Stackhouse scored four points and Jerome Williams' tip-in with 5:44 to play gave the Pistons a 64-56 lead.

Stackhouse scored 12 points and Hill nine in the first quarter as Detroit opened a 33-22 lead. Richmond scored eight points in the second quarter as the Wizards closed to 53-49 at halftime.
