Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider scored 24 points, including a key basket in the final minute, as the Atlanta Hawks withstood a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Chicago Bulls, 89-83.

Rider's 15-foot jumper from the left side gave the Hawks an 85-81 lead with 43 seconds remaining. After Ron Artest missed a 3-pointer and fellow rookie Elton Brand was unable to convert the follow shot, Atlanta's Jim Jackson hit two free throws.

"We didn't have our best game, but we hung in there and stuck it out," Rider said.

The victory was only the fourth in the last 16 games for the Hawks, who snapped a seven-game road losing streak. Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens returned to the sidelines after a four-game absence due to the flu.

"Isaiah was patient and made some big shots," Wilkens said. "The guy is a terrific offensive player.

"Down the stretch, we finally decided to stop somebody. "That's the best defense we've played in the fourth quarter in some time."

Atlanta led by as many as 12 points early in the fourth quarter and held a 77-66 edge on a short jumper by rookie Jason Terry with 6:34 left. But the Bulls responded with a 13-4 run, ignited by six points from reserve Chris Anstey and capped by a basket by Toni Kukoc that trimmed the deficit to 81-79 at the 2:43 mark.

Dikembe Mutombo hit two free throws, but Brand countered with a layup to make it 83-81 with 1:04 left, setting up Rider's big basket.

"It was a disappointing loss for us," Bulls' coach Tim Floyd said. "That was as bad as we have been offensively in a month. We ended up in an isolation game with guys getting the ball and then taking the shot."

After Brand put Chicago ahead 46-39 early in the third quarter, Rider scored eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers, to lead a 12-5 run which tied the score at 51-51 with 6:38 to play.

Will Perdue's layup with 4:09 remaining gave the Bulls a 53-51 advantage but Rider and Jackson combined for 12 points in sparking a 14-4 run that gave Atlanta a 65-57 lead entering the fourth quarter. Rider scored 13 points in the period.

"At halftime, we had a chance to talk about what we needed to do," Wilkens said. "I felt we were hanging on to the ball too long instead of getting other people involved."

Atlanta took advantage of eight Chicago turnovers to lead 20-17 after one quarter. Brand scored seven points in the second quarter as the Bulls rallied for a 44-39 lead at halftime.

Anstey scored a season-high 19 points, including 11 in the final quarter. Kukoc also added 19 points and nine assists, but shot only 9-of-23 and committed 10 turnovers.

"It was a good quarter for us, but unfortunately we didn't win," said Anstey, referring to the fourth-quarter charge. "It was one of the most disappointing losses for us in a while because we thought we could win this one."

Jackson scored 18 points and Alan Henderson added 14 for the Hawks, who shot 44 percent (35-of-79) from the floor and were outrebounded, 46-37.

Chicago shot 39 percent (34-of-88), including a dismal 3-of-22 from behind the arc, and committed 22 turnovers.

Hawks guard Bimbo Coles left the game midway through the second quarter with flu symptoms and did not return.
