Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 32 points as the Dallas Mavericks withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally and held on for a surprising 113-105 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Finley scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, leading Dallas to its first victory in nine games against Portland. The Mavericks' total was the most scored against the Trail Blazers this season.

"We had a lot of energy," Finley said. "Our guys were aggressive and it carried over throughout the game. We held strong and brought it on at the end."

"Michael Finley took the game over in the fourth quarter," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said.

Dallas led 83-71 entering the final quarter but Greg Anthony's layup cut the deficit to 107-105 with 54 seconds left. Hubert Davis, who scored 11 of his 21 points in the period, hit two free throws to give the Mavericks a 109-105 lead with 43 seconds to play.

Scottie Pippen missed a turnaround jumper and Finley sealed the victory with two free throws. Erick Strickland and Greg Buckner added a free throw apiece for the final margin.

"We dug a big hole, a 20-point hole," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "Our guys tried to work through it. We had to pitch a perfect game in the second half to get that win. I give (Dallas) credit because they made the shots they needed to."

After Finley's jumper gave Dallas an 87-84 lead at the 9:04 mark, Steve Smith answered with a layup and was fouled. But he missed the free throw that would have tied the game.

Davis hit consecutive 3-pointers and Cedric Ceballos connected on a driving layup to give Dallas a 99-89 cushion with 5:10 left. But Smith hit four free throws and a steal by Anthony set up Damon Stoudamire's three-point play that made it 99-96 with 3:58 to play.

"Hubert is one of the better 3-point shooters in the league," Finley said. "When guys slack off on him, he's going to make them pay. He did that tonight."

Finley answered the call again, canning a 3-pointer from the left sideline and a short jumper from the right side to push the lead to 104-97 with 3:10 to go. Davis hit his third 3-pointer of the quarter, giving the Mavs a 107-99 lead with 2:13 left, but Anthony and Brian Grant answered with two free throws each to make it 107-103 with 1:29 to play.

"What really iced the game for us was the 3-pointers by Hubert," Nelson said. "That opened the game up when we were really struggling."

Dallas took its largest lead at 65-43 on Dirk Nowitzki's basket early in the second half. Portland used a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to 70-58 at the 6:33 mark.

Strickland and Ceballos scored 17 points each for Dallas, which shot 47 percent (42-of-90) from the floor.

"We jumped out on them early and we just understood that they were going to make that run," Ceballos said. "We pushed it and pushed it and put ourselves in a position to win the game. We were on fire and just kept the momentum going."

Pippen scored 22 points to lead the Trail Blazers, who shot 44 percent (34-of-78) and surrendered 24 points on 12 turnovers.

"We didn't play well, we didn't deserve to win," Pippen said. "We battled back into the game, we just didn't have enough left to finish."
