Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal scored 26 points and Derek Fisher had three 3-pointers in a 17-2 run to open the fourth quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers cooled off the cold-shooting Minnesota Timberwolves, 104-91, for their 17th win in 18 games.

With the game tied 80-80 after three quarters, O'Neal and Fisher combined to score 15 of the Lakers' first 17 points in the final period. Fisher, who scored 14 points off the bench, drained the last of his 3-pointers to cap the run and give Los Angeles a 97-82 lead with 4:53 left.

"Any time you're aggressive out there, good things happen," Fisher said. "I just tried to be aggressive on both ends of the court and make things happen."

Minnesota, which shot only 22 percent (4-of-18) in the final 12 minutes, never got closer than nine the rest of the way. The Timberwolves scored 11 points to tie a franchise low for points in the fourth quarter.

"We had a great run in the third quarter, and then in the fourth quarter we missed some shots early," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "As we missed shots, we had some mental lapses. We had the wrong guys going to trap. A couple of times, we missed some 3s."

O'Neal added 19 rebounds and Kobe Bryant scored 22 points for the Lakers, who rebounded from their loss at Indiana on Friday which snapped their 16-game winning streak. At 32-6, Los Angeles owns the best record in the NBA.

Los Angeles shot 48 percent (40-of-82) from the field, including 11-of-22 from 3-point range, and outrebounded the Timberwolves, 52-38.

"We shot the ball very well tonight," O'Neal said. "We were able to shut them down and keep them to one shot, especially in the fourth quarter, and we were able to get a win."

Kevin Garnett had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Terrell Brandon contributed 21 points as Minnesota lost for only the second time in eight games. The Timberwolves have dropped nine of their last 10 meetings with the Lakers.

Los Angeles led 57-49 at the intermission but Minnesota opened the second half on a 6-0 run as Brandon scored four of his 11 third-quarter points.

The Lakers extended the lead to 74-66 with 4:59 left on a 19-footer by Bryant, who scored seven in the period. But the Timberwolves went on an 11-2 run as Garnett scored four of his 11 third-quarter points, including a dunk with 1:23 remaining to give Minnesota its first lead of the game at 77-76.

After a driving layup by Fisher gave the Lakers a 78-77 lead, Garnett drained a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to give Minnesota a two-point lead. Travis Knight's tip-in in the final second tied the game.

"I think, as much as we struggled with energy late in the second quarter and in the third, we did a nice job of getting it back in the fourth," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "When they put (Joe) Smith on Shaq, I think it allowed him to score, and he was able to get his points. (Ron) Harper did a nice job on Brandon, and Shaq controlled the boards."

Glen Rice scored 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter as the Lakers shot 60 percent (12-of-20) to move out to a 30-20 advantage.

Los Angeles built a 17-point advantage in the second quarter but former Laker Anthony Peeler scored 14 of his 17 points in the second quarter, including five in a 7-0 run late in the period, as Minnesota moved within eight at the intermission.
