Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Grant Hill keeps scoring and the Detroit Pistons keep winning.

Hill scored 39 points, including six on consecutive possessions down the stretch to give the Pistons the lead for good in a 112-107 victory over the Washington Wizards, their ninth win in 10 games.

Hill has been unstoppable in his last seven games, averaging 36.1 points while scoring no fewer than 29. Tonight, he fell one point shy of his fourth 40-point game during that stretch but still rallied Detroit from a 16-point third-quarter deficit, shooting 15-of-20 from the field.

"It was interesting tonight," Hill said. "We came out and played hard in the fourth. We kept saying, `Let's get it to 10 and we'll have a chance.'

"We are a team of slashers," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "Our style of play gets Grant open more and you saw that firsthand in the fourth."

After Rod Strickland turned a difficult drive into a three-point play to give Washington a 103-101 lead with 2:46 remaining, Hill went to work. He made a jumper, two free throws and another jumper on the next three possessions, offsetting two foul shots by Michael Smith and giving Detroit a 107-105 lead with 1:07 to go.

"They couldn't guard him and he hurt them," said Pistons guard Jerry Stackhouse, who scored 27 points. "Our offense is set up for him and when he gets open, you can see what he does. I just chip in and do my part."

Washington's Juwan Howard committed an offensive foul and Hill missed a 3-pointer before Strickland missed another tough inside shot with 12 seconds left.

Stackhouse rebounded and made 1-of-2 foul shots, giving the Wizards another chance. But Tracy Murray misfired on a 3-pointer and Stackhouse sealed it with two free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining.

Christian Laettner scored 19 points for the Pistons, who completed a sweep of the home-and-home series. Detroit beat Washington, 105-98, at Auburn Hills on Friday.

Strickland scored a season-high 27 points and Murray added 17 for the Wizards, who have dropped six of seven and also lost shooting guard Mitch Richmond to a left knee injury late in the first half.

"Mitch is out until Monday. I don't think he'll play," Wizards coach Gar Heard said.

We're always gonna miss Mitch because he's an offensive weapon for us," Strickland said.

Heard and forward Juwan Howard, who have feuded all season, were equally disgusted with the loss. Heard opted not to double-team Hill, using Howard almost exclusively on him.

"I didn't expect Hill to get 39," Heard said. "I expected him to play well but not get 39."

"I don't want to talk about this (bleeping) game," said Howard, who scored 13 points on 3-of-12 shooting.

A slam by Jahidi White, who scored 14 points, gave Washington its largest lead at 69-53 with 9:18 left in the third quarter before Detroit began its comeback. Two jumpers by Hill cut the deficit to 10 points and Stackhouse scored 12 points in the period, which ended with the Wizards holding an 83-77 lead.

"Jerry got us going," Hill said. "We had to fight to get back into this one and it worked."

"They are both playing great," Gentry said. "That's why we came back tonight."

Pistons reserve guard John Crotty scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter. He sparked a 9-2 surge that was capped by Stackhouse's dunk, giving Detroit an 86-85 lead with 9:17 to go.

Strickland scored 15 points in the first half as Washington opened a 61-51 lead. Hill, Stackhouse and Laettner accounted for all but 10 of Detroit's points.
