Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning made sure he and the Miami Heat avenged one of their most embarrassing performances of the season.

Mourning scored nine of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead the Heat to their third win on a four-game road trip, 94-83 over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Twelve days ago, Mourning fouled out after scoring a season-low 12 points in a stunning home loss to the Grizzlies. Today, he made 10-of-12 shots from the field to key a big effort from Miami's frontcourt.

"It was on my mind most definitely. The way we played that day wasn't Heat basketball," Mourning said. "You can learn from adversity and that makes you stronger."

"We wanted to repay the favor. They hurt us at home and we hurt them at home," added P.J. Brown, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Jamal Mashburn chipped in 17 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Heat, who outscored Vancouver's starting trio of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Othella Harrington and Bryant Reeves, 63-35.

"We made plays offensively and defensively to pull out the game. The key to it all was rebounding," Mourning said. "We made a concerted effort to go to the glass. It makes a difference in the outcome of games that we play when we are focused on that aspect of our game."

Michael Dickerson scored 23 points to lead the Grizzlies, who have stumbled since completing a 4-1 road trip, losing three straight at home.

"Tonight we got beat by a better team," said Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins, who was ejected after picking up a technical foul in the final minute. "They took it to us and did a lot of good things."

There were five ties in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before Mashburn's short jumper put Miami ahead for good, 76-74. That sparked a 6-0 run that ended with dunks by Mourning and Brown.

Reeves made 1-of-2 free throws before Miami's Voshon Lenard and Abdur-Rahim traded 3-pointers. After Brown nailed a 14-foot jumper, Mourning scored the Heat's next five points. A layup by Brown with 54 seconds remaining gave Miami a 92-81 cushion.

Hollins was tossed 16 seconds later.

"I tried to get a `T' earlier and didn't get one. Some nights, the referees call them quick and sometimes they don't," he said. "I felt awful about that fourth-quarter run. They got it going, we couldn't score. They got some offensive rebounds and that was the ballgame."

The Heat shot nearly 58 percent (11-of-19) in the final period, finishing at 49 percent (38-of-77) overall. They had a 48-32 rebounding edge and outscored Vancouver in the paint, 44-28.

"Our big guys were good. They did a great job inside on their bigs," Miami coach Pat Riley said.

"They were real big," agreed Abdur-Rahim, who was 8-of-20 shots. "They beat us up pretty good on the glass today."

The Grizzlies came out firing, shooting 74 percent (14-of-19) in the first quarter to grab a 31-25 lead behind 13 points from Dickerson.

Vancouver stretched its advantage to 11 points midway through the second period, but Brown had six as the Heat closed the quarter with a 16-4 run and went into halftime with a 46-45 edge.

Mike Bibby had nine points, three steals and two assists in the third quarter, rallying the Grizzlies from a seven-point deficit into a 65-65 tie entering the final period.

Bibby finished with 15 points, nine assists and seven steals, but Vancouver shot under 44 percent (34-of-78) and missed 7-of-20 free throws.

"They were denying me the ball, I just didn't get the touches," Dickerson said. "The shots just didn't fall collectively tonight."
