Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Even on a holiday, the bank was open for Malik Sealy.

Sealy banked home an improbable 3-pointer as time expired, giving the Minnesota Timberwolves a dramatic 101-100 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

The Timberwolves would not even have been in positon for the win if not for the efforts of forwards Kevin Garnett and Joe Smith in the fourth quarter. The duo combined for 29 of the Wolves' 34 points over the final 12 minutes, helping them overcome a 10-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. Garnett had 15 and Smith 14.

One of the NBA's young superstars, Garnett finished with a career-high 37 points on 16-of-26 shooting. The 23-year-old, who also grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out seven assists, surpassed his previous career best of 35, set six days ago against Miami.

"We had chances to fold, but we didn't," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "KG (Kevin Garnett) was phenomenal. Every shot he made was a pressure shot."

Mark Jackson looked like he was going to give the Pacers the win when he made a leaner in the lane with 1.7 seconds remaining. Minnesota called timeout to set up the winning play.

Sealy took the inbounds pass from Sam Mitchell just to the left of the top of the key and banked in the shot, giving Minnesota the victory.

"The ironic thing about that play was that I was supposed to be the one throwing in the ball," Sealy said. "Sam had been sitting for a while so I thought I should be the one to come off the screen. I didn't think the ball was going to come to me, as KG was the first choice. I got it up in the air and went for the win. I didn't call glass, but it went in."

Sealy and Smith finished with 16 points apiece for the Timberwolves, who have won 12 of their last 15 games.

"Flip told me to be aggressive in the fourth quarter and stop taking jump shots," Smith said. "He told me to put my head down and go to the hole. That got me to the line a few times and then it opened up my outside shot later in the quarter."

Rik Smits had 20 points and Reggie Miller 17 for Indiana, which had a three-game winning streak stopped while losing for only the third time in the last 13 contests.

"Our defense was good at times," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We had the lead with 1.7 seconds left ... we'll take that anytime. They just hit a tough shot."

The Pacers held a a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter and were still in front, 88-81, with 5:56 remaining after Jalen Rose, who scored 16 points, sank a 20-footer.

However, Smith had two baskets around one by Sealy to cut the deficit to one before Rose hit another jumper. Garnett answered with consecutive jumpers, giving the Wolves a 91-90 lead with 2:54 to play.

That lead did not last long as Miller nailed a 3-pointer and was fouled by Anthony Peeler. The second-best free throw shooter in the NBA at over 92 percent, Miller completed the four-point play.

Smith hit 1-of-2 from the line and Garnett a jumper to tie it. Garnett and Davis each scored four straight points, to forge a 98-98 deadlock with 21 seconds remaining. Jackson's spinning shot in the lane with 1.7 seconds to go put the Pacers back on top.

Jackson talked about the Wolves' young star.

"Maybe double team him," Jackson said. "He's an unbelievable talent -- a 6-11 two guard that can do it all. Not much you can do. I thought our guys that were guarding him made him take tough shots, turnaround jumpers, fadeaways, he made them all. There's not much you can do then."

Austin Croshere and Jackson each collected double-doubles. Croshere had 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while Jackson finished with 13 and 11 assists.

Croshere and Rose each scored eight points in the first half, helping the Pacers open a 48-45 advantage.

The Timberwolves shot 46 percent (43-of-93) while Indiana finished at 44 percent (35-of-79). Minnesota also held a 44-40 rebounding advantage.
