Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- This time it was Sam Cassell's turn to burn the Atlanta Hawks.

Cassell scored 13 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer, a baseline jumper and a pair of free throws in the final minutes, to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 107-101 win over Atlanta.

It was Milwaukee's third win in as many meetings with the Hawks this season. Glenn Robinson matched a season-high with 36 points in the Bucks' 116-113 victory over the Hawks on January 4. In the first meeting between the teams here on November 14, Ray Allen scored 31 in a 119-109 win.

Today, it was Cassell who sparked the Bucks, exploiting rookie guard Jason Terry for most of the fourth quarter. Atlanta starting point guard Bimbo Coles missed his second straight game with the flu.

"If a guy gets 31 points, that's on me," Terry said. "(Cassell) made some big shots today. His teammates got him the ball. I've just got to step it up a little more."

A 3-pointer by Cassell from the right of the key put Milwaukee ahead for good at 100-98 with 2:28 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"I just took what they gave me," Cassell said. "I just wanted to make my open shots."

The six-year veteran set up Robinson for an open 3-pointer, increasing Milwaukee's lead to 103-98 with 41.4 seconds left. Cassell tried to back in Terry in the lane and quickly flicked a pass out to Robinson when forward Alan Henderson moved inside to help Terry.

Robinson missed 11-of-15 shots before the 3-pointer.

"Glenn had an awful night shooting and then he hit the big shot," said Bucks coach George Karl. "Sam made a nice kickout pass."

The Bucks were 10-of-14 from 3-point range.

Jimmy Jackson kept Atlanta's hopes alive with a 3-pointer off a screen from the top of the key with 31.7 seconds to play.

After a timeout, Karl ran an isolation play for Cassell, who drove toward the left baseline and flipped a shot over Terry to give Milwaukee a 105-101 advantage with 12.6 seconds left. Cassell stole the ensuing inbounds pass by Isaiah Rider near midcourt and was fouled from behind by Jackson. He converted both free throws with 11.6 seconds remaining.

"(Cassell) had a big game," Rider said. "He controlled it and he finished it."

Allen scored 23 points and Scott Williams had 12 and 14 rebounds for the Bucks.

The loss was the 14th in 18 games for the Hawks, who fell 10 games under .500. The 13-23 start is Atlanta's worst since going 12-24 in the 1976-77 season.

"It's frustrating," Rider said. "It's our story right now. Coaches have to go in the lab and figure out what we want to run. We're just losing."

Henderson led Atlanta with 20 points and 11 rebounds, his 10th double-double of the season. Jackson added 17 points.

After a 35-point game against Philadelphia on Saturday, Rider was held to 15 on 7-of-18 shooting in his matchup with Allen.

While not in foul trouble, Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo played only 22 minutes and finished with five points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

"I was a little bit shocked," Mutombo said of his limited time. "The clock just kept going down and I was still sitting. I really have nothing to say about it. It was a coach's decision."

Lorenzen Wright played most of the fourth quarter at center and tied a season high with 14 points. LaPhonso Ellis contributed 13 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

The Bucks made 12-of-their first 15 shots from the field and raced to a 26-14 lead.

After a corner jumper by Vinny Del Negro gave Milwaukee its biggest lead at 39-26 with 10:40 left in the second quarter, Ellis and Wright combined for 17 points as the Hawks closed the half with a 28-13 run.

A seven-foot hook shot from the left side by Rider tied it at 52-52 with 42 seconds left. Atlanta took the halftime lead on a layup by Ellis with 24 seconds remaining.

"During the first half we got a little happy," Allen said. "We kind of took some bad shots and then we were down at the half. But we buckled down."

The Bucks scored the first nine points of the second half for a 61-54 lead. Allen and Ervin Johnson converted layups, Williams hit a jumper and Robinson connected on a 3-pointer to complete the run.

Milwaukee extended the lead to 76-64 on a 3-pointer by Allen with 2:32 left, capping a 15-point quarter for the Olympian.

But the Hawks went on a 14-4 run in the fourth quarter, opening a 92-91 lead on a pair of free throws by Terry with 6:09 left.
