Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Rookie Steve Francis had 26 points and 12 assists as the Houston Rockets withstood a furious rally in the final minute to win their fourth straight game, 90-89 over the Portland Trail Blazers.

The four-game winning streak is Houston's longest since a nine-game run from March 16-30 of last season.

Francis became the first Houston player to register double figures in assists in four consecutive games since Kenny Smith in 1992.

"This is the first time for me my team has won four in a row and it feels great," Francis said. "Even through injuries, we were able to come back and beat a real good team."

Portland scored the game's last five points and had two great chances to win. But Scottie Pippen missed a running banker and Greg Anthony missed a foul-line jumper in the final seconds.

"I think this is our most impressive win of the year," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We had beaten the Lakers earlier but to beat Portland in a back-to-back situation (for us) is phenomenal."

Anthony took the inbounds pass on the left sideline and looked inside before dribbling to the foul line and settling for the errant jump shot. The final play was set up when Houston was unable to control Pippen's miss with 5.7 seconds remaining and lost the ball out of bounds.

"It was pretty helter-skelter," Anthony said, referring to the final play. "The play was supposed to go to Steve Smith and try to get the ball to Rasheed (Wallace). But we never got into the play. I was the last resort. I had to do something, so I shot it and unfortunately it didn't fall."

Pippen, who was traded to Portland in the offseason for six players, was heartily booed every time he touched the ball. In his second return to Houston, he had 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Anthony Miller hit two free throws to cap a 10-0 run and give the Rockets a 90-84 lead with 1:23 left. But Rasheed Wallace converted a 3-point play at the 1:05 mark and Brian Grant blocked Francis' drive and fed Pippen for a coast-to-coast layup with 34 seconds left, setting up the final sequence.

Portland took a 60-52 advantage on a basket by Damon Stoudamire with 6:19 left. But Houston responded with a 9-0 run to grab a 61-60 lead with 4:16 to play and took a 73-71 lead into the fourth quarter.

Rookie Kenny Thomas set season highs with 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets, who shot 46 percent (36-of-79) but made only 13-of-23 free throws.

"I think I showed a little bit of what I can do offensively tonight," Thomas said. "I been playing well lately.

"We played every minute of the game real hard tonight. A win against Portland really gives us confidence."

Hakeem Olajuwon scored six points and blocked four shots in his second game since missing 22 games with hernia. He was not on the floor in the final minutes.

"We have guys on our team that create so much energy," Olajuwon said. "Tonight we got contributions from everyone. You could feel the energy from the team, the bench and from the crowd. Our young guys got a chance to show what they can do against a real good team."

Portland led 23-22 after 12 minutes as both Pippen and Francis scored seven points. Smith scored nine points in the second quarter, giving the Trail Blazers a 47-43 lead at halftime.

Smith led Portland with 21 points but was scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Trail Blazers shot 43 percent (37-of-86)) from the floor and held a 46-40 rebounding edge.
