Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored 10 of his 26 points in the pivotal third quarter as the Charlotte Hornets continued the healing process with a 96-86 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Derrick Coleman added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets, who improved to 2-1 since the tragic death of guard Bobby Phills in an auto accident one week ago.

"We have to continue to move on," Jones said. "Bobby is a big part of what we're doing here. We'll never forget him."

"It was good to get a win on the road," Charlotte coach Paul Silas added. "It's been a struggle all season long but we're slowly creeping back into this thing. I like our chances."

Charlotte squandered a 15-point lead but regrouped to open a 53-43 halftime advantage. Jones took charge in a third period that saw the teams combine for only 35 points on 11-of-38 shooting. He also finished with seven steals.

"In these trying times it shows the character we have in this room, the guys and the coaches," Jones said. "It would be easy to lie down -- we have an excuse -- but we're still playing extremely hard."

Elton Brand scored 24 points and fellow rookie Ron Artest added 19 for the Bulls, who fell to 0-9 against Central Division foes. Chicago (6-30) did not have two comebacks in it and fell to 4-4 since the return of star forward Toni Kukoc, who scored 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting.

"We had no energy today," said Brand, whose team was coming off a surprising overtime win at Miami on Tuesday. "We didn't have the fight we usually do. We were just pretty tired."

In the first quarter, the Bulls went scoreless for the first 3:40 and the last 2:28. Jones scored eight points in the period, including two free throws that capped an 8-0 burst and gave Charlotte a 29-15 lead.

After a basket by Artest opened the second quarter, Jones made a 3-pointer to give the Hornets their largest lead. The Bulls rallied behind Artest, who scored eight points in a 23-7 surge, including a driving layup that gave Chicago its only lead at 40-39 with five minutes left in the first half.

Jones followed his own miss to trigger a 14-4 run that closed the half and gave Charlotte a 53-43 lead. Anthony Mason scored six points in the burst.

"I think we played defense extremely hard," Jones said. "We made them take a lot of jump shots from the outside instead of letting them pound it inside."

The Bulls closed to 55-48 on a three-point play by Brand with 9:25 left in the third quarter, but Jones scored twice and Coleman hit a long jumper for a 61-48 advantage with 6:29 to go.

Chicago got no closer than eight points thereafter. It trailed 72-59 entering the fourth quarter and never got the deficit below nine as Coleman and rookie Eddie Robinson scored eight points apiece in the period.

Mason had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Elden Campbell scored 14 points for the Hornets, who shot 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field and held a 54-36 rebounding advantage.

"Mason started shooting the ball tonight and that's what I've been wanting him to do," Silas said. "Finally, he's been shooting the ball when he's got the shot and the ball's going in."

Brand grabbed 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who shot less than 40 percent (33-of-83) and were outscored 29-14 from the foul line.

"I think the numbers tonight really tell the story," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "You can't always say that, but they outrebounded us by a wide margin. ... The free-throw line was a big story tonight. We knew it would be."
