Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd had 24 points and 12 assists and made two crucial free throws and a smart foul in the waning seconds as the Phoenix Suns handed the Denver Nuggets their sixth straight loss, 101-99.

Kidd scored 12 points in the decisive fourth quarter. His free throws and foul sealed the win for Phoenix, which won back-to-back games for the first time since December 18-20. The Suns defeated Denver, 113-100, on Sunday.

"We let them creep back in but we made some big plays at the end," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "Any win on the road is a great win."

The Nuggets, who are enduring their worst stretch since a seven-game skid to end last season, have lost three straight at home and dropped four games under .500 for the first time this season. Denver has lost 11 of 12 overall to Phoenix.

George McCloud was fouled on a 3-point attempt and drained all three free throws to cut Denver's deficit to 99-98 with 6.5 seconds to play. But Kidd calmly responded with two foul shots to give Phoenix a 101-98 advantage with 5.2 seconds left.

The Nuggets still had a chance to tie it but Kidd fouled Nick Van Exel in the backcourt with 1.2 seconds to go. Instead of making the first and intentionally missing the second, Van Exel -- shooting from two feet behind the foul line -- missed the first and made the second.

"At the end, the ball was coming to me," Kidd said. "I was going to take it upon myself to seal the game and on their end, we didn't want anybody to take a 3 so I fouled Van Exel."

"I thought our execution down the stretch was good," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "We played soft at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth. We stood around a lot and took jump shots. That's where we lost the game."

Bryant Stith, who scored 10 of his season-high 14 points in the final quarter as Ron Mercer watched from the bench, hit a 3-pointer from the right corner and an uncontested layup to draw Denver within 93-91 with 2:49 to play.

"We wanted to give Ron a rest, but the way Bryant was playing, we decided to leave him in the game," Issel explained.

The teams went almost two minutes without scoring until Kidd answered with a basket from the right baseline. After Antonio McDyess made 1-of-2 free throws, Kidd drove the lane and dished to Cliff Robinson for a 16-foot jumper which gave Phoenix a 97-92 advantage with 27 seconds left.

Raef LaFrentz hit one of his career-high four 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 97-95 with 20 seconds remaining. But Kidd stepped to the line and made two free throws three seconds later.

Robinson followed his dominant 50-point performance in Sunday's win with 24 and Tom Gugliotta had 21 and 15 rebounds for the Suns, who shot 45 percent (38-of-85) from the floor and made 21-of-22 free throws.

"This is the best I've felt," said Gugliotta, who had his best game since suffering a life-threatening seizure last month. "I got some looks and at the basket and made some shots. I had some spring in my legs in the fourth quarter. It's fun to play games like this."

McDyess had 26 points and 11 rebounds and LaFrentz added 22, eight and seven blocked shots for the Nuggets, who shot 44 percent (34-of-78) and were outrebounded, 44-38.

"I think we're down right now," McDyess said. "Our confidence is not there in the fourth quarter like it used to be. I think the chemistry's there -- we're just a young team."
