Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Matt Bullard scored a season-high 24 points as the Houston Rockets used a barrage of 3-pointers to record their sixth straight victory, 101-88 over the Miami Heat.

Bullard hit six of the season-best 15 3-pointers for the Rockets, whose winning streak is their longest since a nine-game run last season. Houston hit 13-of-21 shots from behind the arc, including 12-of-13 in the middle two quarters after making only two of ten in the opening period.

"This was one of those nights," Bullard said. "I felt really good before the game. I missed a few early, but after I made a few, we got rolling."

"This is my most satisfying victory this year," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich added. "I can't tell you how well this team executed tonight. They swung the ball as well as I could ever want."

The victory also ended an eight-game losing streak against Miami.

"We didn't show up tonight," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "The Rockets played great, but it was a very, very poor effort on our part -- our worst performance of the year."

"We had our scheme but we never executed it," he added. "I don't think I've ever seen a team make 12 out of 13 3-pointers, but they were measuring their shots. We didn't cover them, I know we can but we didn't."

The Heat took a 29-22 lead midway through the second quarter, but Houston drilled five 3-pointers during a 20-5 run to take a 42-34 lead with 1:26 left before halftime. Cuttino Mobley, who scored 13 of his 18 points in the period, had three and Walt Williams and Kenny Thomas added one apiece.

Voshon Lenard kept Miami within striking distance with a 3-pointer, cutting the deficit to 66-57 late in the third quarter. But the Rockets ended Miami's momentum with a 12-4 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Bullard and Mobley, to extend the lead to 78-61 entering the final period.

Mobley made two free throws to give Houston its largest lead, 90-70, with 5:15 left and was never threatened thereafter.

"We tried to drive and kick the ball out for open shots," Mobley said. "We have a lot of good shooters on this team and were beginning to utilize all of them."

Alonzo Mourning, who grabbed his 5,000th career rebound in the first quarter, finished with 11 to go along with 23 points. Voshon Lenard scored 20 points for Miami, which shot 40 percent (37-of-93) from the field.

"Collectively, it was a poor effort," Mourning said. "You give that effort against anyone -- you're going to lose. It was everybody, including me. You might win in college, but not at this level."

Tim Hardaway, who played his second game since returning from a right knee injury, contined to show signs of rust with five points on 2-of-9 shooting and five assists in 23 minutes. He had a season-low two points on 1-of-6 shooting in his first game back, a 101-79 victory over Atlanta on Friday.

Williams made three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points and rookie Steve Francis had 10 points and nine assists for the Rockets, who shot 47 percent (38-of-81), including 15-of-31 from behind the arc.

Miami led 22-16 after 12 minutes, as the Rockets shot only 29 percent in the first quarter. Houston caught fire in the second period, however, using 61 percent shooting to surge to a 46-40 lead.

"At the end of the first quarter we led 22-16, but it was really fool's gold," Riley said. "They had every shot they wanted -- they just missed them and it was just a matter of time before they started hitting them."
