Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill's lower back had better heal in a hurry.

Without their leading scorer and best player, the Detroit Pistons stumbled down the stretch and suffered their fourth straight loss, 99-91 to the Dallas Mavericks.

Hill, who suffered a bruised tailbone in Saturday's loss to league-worst Chicago, watched from the sidelines as Detroit shot 25 percent (6-of-24) and blew an eight-point lead in the final period to match its four-game skid to start the season.

"Anyone else with this kind of injury, I'm not sure would be walking around right now," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "When (Hill is) able to play, he'll step in and play. It's unfortunate that he's out right now because these are important games. Now we've got to have all of our guys step up. The only way we're going to be able to do that is as a collective group."

Jerry Stackhouse, the second half of the NBA's highest-scoring tandem, collected a season-high 36 points in Hill's absence but the Pistons were undone by a rookie guard on a 10-day contract.

Greg Buckner came off the bench and scored all of his eight points in the final three minutes, helping coach Don Nelson record his 900th career victory.

Buckner made a 19-footer before his driving layup put the Mavericks ahead to stay, 90-89, with 2:27 to play. He also drained a 17-footer before capping the scoring with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left.

"He has the heart of a lion and wasn't afraid to step in and take the shots," Nelson said of Buckner. "I think he'll be quite a player in this league."

"I work on those shots every day," Buckner said. "It's just a matter of shooting with some rhythm. I have to shoot to get the respect of the guys in this league. Tonight I had to make the shots because they were leaving me open. Teams double off of me because I don't shoot that much and I'm a rookie."

Cedric Ceballos had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Michael Finley added 18 and 10 for Dallas, which helped Nelson improve his career mark to 900-736. The Mavericks posted their first win in eight meetings with Detroit dating to March 23, 1995.

"I'm happy with my 900th win," Nelson said. "But I don't want to underplay the game itself. It was won the way it should be won. It was hard-fought and I'm all sweaty. There were a lot of different decisions and strategy that went into it. This game went through the whole gamut, that's how I'm gonna remember that one."

Erick Strickland had 16 points and Shawn Bradley and Dirk Nowitzki added 14 apiece for Dallas, which improved to 7-17 on the road by shooting 47 percent (38-of-81) and scoring 18 points off turnovers.

Jud Buechler made his first start of the season in Hill's forward spot and had a respectable night with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with seven rebounds in 33 minutes.

"It's the way with a lot of things in life, you really don't appreciate the guy until he's gone," Buechler said. "For one thing, it put me in the starting lineup, which is really a foreign thing. But the whole feel is different without him. There were times when we found ourselves saying, `Where's Grant?' and then realized he was sitting behind the bench."

Jerome Williams had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Christian Laettner and John Crotty added 10 points apiece for the Pistons, who shot 39 percent (35-of-89) and held a 46-45 edge on the boards.

Crotty's 3-pointer with 10:41 to play gave Detroit its biggest lead, 80-72, but Dallas came roaring back with a 7-0 run.

Strickland made a free throw, Ceballos knocked down a 3-pointer and Davis followed with a 26-footer to cut the deficit to 80-79 with 9:15 remaining.

Stackhouse, who was 14-of-30 from the field, answered with a 3-pointer and Michael Curry hit a 17-footer to give the Pistons a six-point cushion. Nowitzki responded with a 3-pointer and a dunk to again shave the lead to one before Buckner took over down the stretch.

"We just told (Buckner) to keep his eyes open," Ceballos said. "The points will come. You can't look the ball into the basket."

Strickland and Ceballos combined for 21 first-quarter points, staking the Mavs to a 25-18 lead.

Stackhouse caught fire in the second quarter, scoring 13 points to pull Detroit within 51-49 at intermission. He added 12 in the third as the Pistons opened a 76-70 lead entering the final period.

"We got away from what we were doing," Stackhouse said of his team's collapse down the stretch. "We had the game right where we wanted it but we started doing things that weren't conducive to winning. We have to get on the same page. Everyone was trying to win tonight but some guys were doing too much. We were taking shots that we had no business taking in that situation."
