Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The way the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors went at each other, you would have thought Dennis Rodman was involved.

Amid speculation Rodman has been offered a contract by incoming owner Mark Cuban, the Mavericks routed the Warriors, 117-103, in a game highlighted by a pair of third-quarter altercations.

The first incident came with Dallas holding a 73-56 lead with 6:52 left in the third quarter. Warriors swingman Mark Davis bumped into Mavericks center Shawn Bradley and the two began shoving each other.

Davis, nearly a foot shorter than the 7-6 Bradley, picked up the big man and bodyslammed him before other players intervened. Both players were ejected.

"Guys are going to pick on Shawn for one reason or another," said Dallas guard Michael Finley, who had 30 points and 10 rebounds. "He just appears to get the short end of the stick sometimes when it comes to technicals."

Tempers flared again with 1:18 remaining and the Mavs holding an 85-68 lead. Dallas guard Steve Nash drove for a layup and was knocked to the floor by Warriors rookie guard Vonteego Cummings. Nash got up and charged Cummings before being restrained.

"The thing with Nash was uncalled for," Finley said. "Look at the replay. He didn't attempt to go to the ball or make a play on the ball. He just took out Steve. I was a little upset with that. I let him know that."

Nash received a technical foul and Cummings also was ejected with a flagrant foul.

"I don't have a problem with the ref calling the flagrant foul and wanting to throw me out, but my intention was not to hurt Steve Nash but to make sure he didn't make the layup," Cummings said.

"He was probably just frustrated," Nash said. "He took me out and I just kind of took exception to it. I was in the air and didn't really have a chance to protect myself."

Finley went after Cummings, who said he was punched.

"I can deal with you throwing me off, OK," Cummings said. "But I can't deal with three guys on the other team surrounding me and pushing me and you didn't do anything to them. ... I don't know who threw a punch, but somebody threw a punch. I wouldn't say it was Finley, though. It was either Finley or Nash. It didn't connect."

"I didn't see any punches get thrown," Finley said. "It was more or less grabbing and things like that."

The feud continued after the game, when Dallas forward Gary Trent -- sidelined with a left groin strain -- went into the showers in the visiting locker to accost Cummings.

"He came in," Cummings said. "I was in the shower. He came into the shower. We had words but I won't discuss what was said. After that, security came and got him."

"It wasn't like that," said Trent, who was placed on the injured list before the game. "I went over there and asked him, `What's wrong with you? You don't do (stuff) like that to my teammate."

Known for his chippy play as much as his rebounding, Rodman reportedly has been offered $500,000 by Cuban to play the rest of the season for the Mavericks. He has been involved in more than his share of skirmishes, including one with a cameraman and another with a referee.

"I talked with Dennis Rodman's agent (Steve Chasman) again today," Cuban said. "Nellie and I feel confident we can work something out with them. The big delays are previous commitments for Dennis and us working out security for something like this."

Some of Rodman's previous commitments include attending parties around the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl over the next two weekends. He won seven straight rebounding titles from 1992-98 but was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers last season after a series of team rules violations and has been arrested twice since.

"You can't question Dennis as a basketball player," Finley said. "He's one of the premier rebounders for the last couple of years that he played a full season. He's very active on the defensive end. Off the court, we have no control of that. Only Dennis can control himself off the court."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points and Cedric Ceballos added 18 for the Mavericks, who began a five-game homestand with its fifth win in seven games. Dallas swept the four-game season series from Golden State, its first since a 5-0 sweep in the 1986-87 season.

Antawn Jamison bounced back with 33 points and a career-high 21 rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 41 percent (38-of-93) and trailed by as many as 22 points. Golden State has lost 14 of its last 16 games.

"This isn't a game for the meek," Warriors coach Garry St. Jean said. "You have to stand and make a statement."

Finley (11) and Nowitzki combined for 19 points in the first quarter, offsetting 14 by Jamison and giving Dallas a 31-20 lead. Finley scored 11 more in the second quarter, which ended with the Mavs holding a 59-48 lead.

Bradley had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks before he was ejected. Dallas shot 49 percent (42-of-86) and was beaten on the boards, 56-41.
